Extended Warranties for Snowmobiles

Over 8,000? Come on, who's going to believe that. I bet it's all soaked with oil and trail debris, and looks like a pile of trash going down the trail. Probably has some branches wedged in somewhere, hence the name brushhog. Maybe you should stick to lumberjacking rather than snowmobiling.

Yes 8,000 and it may be a bit oily under the hood but I would rather have it look oily and have fun than look all pretty and just do a bunch of work polishing and washing it. And over the course of 8,000 miles, it has hit a few branches in its time.

That's what kids are for, they do a great job washing and polishing when offered a $5 bill. You've hit a few branches? Sounds to me like someone who needs to stay off the trails in order to keep the rest of us safe. You're probably one of those guys who REFUSES to get insurance, and when you get one of us killed with your miracle sled you'll lose your house! Your sled will probably miraculously come out un-harmed too.

Are you kidding?

Why would you even buy a sled if you KNOW has problems?

Some people buy a certain brand no matter what. Right now Poo has problems with their 800 2s & JD members are buying them. You have to ask them why? An extended warranty for a 800 Poo would be a very good idea as many are on 2nd engine already. Poo 600 would not need extended warranty. A doo 2011 800 etek extended warranty would also be a good idea no proven performance yet. Yamaha 4 year warranty is part of standard deal in 2011 just sign up for it but Yams prices are up there on Apexs not so bad on other models.

Well, I am pretty brand loyal myself. I have always bought Doo's. That being said, I know that Doo has had some models in the past that have had known problems. I would not buy those models. I guess I just don't understand why anyone would do that with any brand. I like to ride not fix sleds, and not get stranded.

I guess I will just roll the dice. They sell those warranties because they profit from them.

Isn't that what business is all about. If I can't profit from something I will not touch it. They and you are now in the risk if you buy extended warranty. It's all about the risk level one is willing to take. This is like the insurance/no insurance discussions. I used to never buy insurance, only to go into Canada. Now that sleds have gotton so expensive and complex that I have changed my view on both. Sure I could roll the dice, but as I have gotten older I have gotten far more to lose "IF" (a big if but still there) something happens.

Figured out? When you call me polarisrushNOpro, it gives me the impression that you just want to be against me no matter what I say. Everything I've posted since joining you have disagreed with. I do not appreciate your lack of respect for a new memeber. And for your information famooseguy, in order to have peace of mind, it's a good idea to buy the extended warranty even if you never end up using it. What happens when your sled breaks and it's going to cost 1500 to get it fixed? You're now out 1500 instead of the 3 or 4 hunderd for extended warranty.

I don't disagree with you, famousguy, as I would not touch a Poo 800 with a 39.5 foot pole because we know they have problems. Just because you & I would not buy a sled with known problems others do. JD members would be well advised to purchase 4 year warranty on any Poo 800 & this topic is about extented warranties which is an opportunuty to enlighten a few before they spend the lean green without warranty coverage for problematic sleds.

I appreciate all of the opinions shared up to this point. I am not really a fan of spending money on worthless things which is why I wanted some input from people here.

Here's the scoop, and the purpose of my original post. I am buying a 2009 Dragon 800 Switchback. It has 2,500 miles on it and has had all of the updates done. The guy claims he has had zero problems with it (I will have the dealer run the VIN to confirm it's history in the morning). I am getting it for $5,600 with a couple of extras.

My position is this. At that price, shelling out a little more scratch for a warranty, I'm still ahead of the game. That is my purpose for inquiring about companies that offer after market warranties for our toys. I'm a little apprehensive about this motor but I think the price is right for the risk involved if I can get some extra coverage. If anyone knows of any other companies that offer extended mechanical coverage for snowmobiles, I would like to investigate my options because I'm a rider, not a wrencher.

Thanks again!
Dave

Dave B, I would try looking real hard for that extra warranty. I just got word of my 2009 800 switchback needing pistons, crank, head, block, well pretty much everything was destroyed. A whole new engine is hopefully coming from polaris. Just waiting on them looking at the pictures. Sled has 1300 miles. I would still buy your deal. Not everyone is having the bad luck I am. Good luck and have fun next season.

xcswitch I know exactly how you feel. In 2003 I was reading a few items here & there about doo 800 bad crank bearings & flaking rings on most doo engines. The internet was not what it is today & I thought I don't think there is really anything wrong with my Doo 800. Boy was I wrong!!! 800 crank froze & tear down revealed flaking rings. Doo said out of warranty tuff luck didn't care that the engine problems were bad quailty on Doos part. So I had to spend $2,220 on refurb Doo 800 engine to have a sled that I had no faith in. Ran it for warranty period on refurb 800 & traded in on Yamaha Attak non current.

I will never buy a sled that has KNOWN engine problems. Sleds cost too much & the season is too short to have major engine problems. It is not a gamble if the engine blow it is a matter of when & who owns it when it does blow. After you experince a blown engine on a newer sled it changes you appetite for risk. Extended warranty helps ease the pain a bit but nothing helps loss of faith in product & lost riding downtime.

Yes, figured out. You may want to go back and look at all of your posts. Who is against who? I do have you figured out.
