Extra Fuel Tank - Recommendations

My son just bought an 07 Ski-Doo MXZ Renegade X. Our first long trip in the U.P., he ran out of gas after just 70 miles. I would like to get him an external tank for this sled to increase his range. Any recommendations??

Jerry Can

Ski Doo makes a Jerry can that holds roughly 3+ gallons. Looks for one on e-bay or craiglist. There will be someone out there that totalled their sled or have update to a new rev xp. Make sure you get the strap and any mounting hardware. Good luck!

Is he doing alot of off-trail?? That is not very good mileage at all. My wifes 800 Blizzard consistantly gets 14 mpg and if we are with newbees ridin slow she will get 17 mpg.

As far as the tank, make sure to get the mounting hardware (strap) with it. You will pay as much or more just for that from doo. Usually I see them listed on sites for $50 range. In fact I think in the gear section on here a guy has one for around that price.

He has issues with that sled if he ran out after 70 miles

Fix the Sled, its runing way to Rich or something is wrong. I would pull the Plugs first and see if both cylinders are the same. If they are then you have isolated the problem a little.

Also if you smell Gas you may have a pin hole in a Gas line.

I agree with something might be wrong. I get better mileage on my 800R than that when im in the woods and climbing all day.

Thanks for all the comments. I think we will wait until we have another long run to check the millage before we add the tank.

A friend had a REV 600 H.O. that was hard on fuel, seems they replaced the reeds and it helped a lot!!

RP7X says: "my first trip to the up with my pro x i was walkin at 72 miles , it all has to do with the fliper "

I agree 100 percent with RP7X. Me and my brother had brand new 800 xcxp's. Both ran identical, and I sucked fumes at 71 miles on first tank. We 2 upped to station about 2 miles, and his died and coasted in, so he got 73 miles.
I have had many friends brag about getting 15mpg or better, but when they ride with us, they don't even get 10 mpg.

I have a 07 renegade X 600 SDI and I always get more then 100 miles out of a tank backcountry riding in the U.P. even more when we just trail ride.

You need to get in the habit of burping you tank as you fill it and you can get and extra 1 to 1.5 gallons of gas in it. What I do is fill the tank and then push down on the back of the sled and hold it there for 20 seconds and then refill the tank. You will be surprised and how much goes in the tank.

Hope this helps a little but I would still get it checked out.

It depends a lot on which motor is in that sled. Is it the 600HO, 600SDI, or the 800HO, neither HO are very kind on mileage, but the 800HO is definitely worse. If this is an SDI then there is something definitely wrong.

It doesn't fully equate, but off trail, gigkessler on his '06 800 HO gets somewhere between 60-80 miles on a tank depending on the snow conditions. My 800R gets about 100-110 on the same terrain. Maybe I'm not as hard on the flipper as much, but still the 800R motor is a lot better efficiency than the older 800HO.

That being said, the '05 600HO is the only sled we ran out of fuel at least 5 times because it's range was so much less than the others in the group...

If you look for a regular old gas jug, try to find the old style that is not self vented. they don't make them any more but every once in a while you can find one on clearance...
