jbabmom I am curious of where specifically you fish on the sugar camp chain??? Do you have a place up there???? I fish the area regularly my inlaws have a place on Rustic Lane just off of Ripco Road on the north edge of Sugar Camp. That area is some of the best fishing in the entire northwoods, Crappies, smallies and Walleyes specifically. It took me a long while to learn the area lakes and techinques but boy has the pesistance paid off. We were up the second week of October and caught some beautiful Crappies. My daughter, 6 years old got one just short of 14 inches and my 8 year old lost about a 4 pound smallie!!!! My inlaws lake is small only in the 60 acre range but boy does it produce a couple really nice musky's on a yearly basis for me. 40 incher plus. Lost one two years ago boat side over 50 inches. I know because I already have a 48 incher on the wall. This fish that I thought was totally "tuckered out" and ready to be brought in went psycho shaking its head to the point it eventually broke the main wire which made up the spinner bait I was using. I was physically shaking in the boat for quite some time after that experience with a fish that big.
Had great success (over 25 caughta0 in Northern Wisconsin two weekends ago on the sugar camp chain, including a couple of really nice slabs over 13 inches Jigging with minnows
Are you fishing from a boat? What kind of depths are you in? I haven't had much experience fishing from a boat jigging for crappies. There's a ton of small lakes by where the future cabin will be and I'd like to figure out how to locate them.
we've been having pretty good luck here in MN trolling for crappies with tiny little rappalas, lots of line and little weight in front of them, last weekend they were hitting about as fast as you could pull them in. I'm sure jigging with a minnow would work, but with the new law requiring bait to be dumped out before leaving the lake, I've been trying other methods.

I try to stay away from live bait. I've been using 1/64 or 1/80 hair jigs with 2 on the end of the line about a foot apart. Sometimes I put one of the crappie nibbles on there. I'm not sure if that works or not. It seems like I do better than the guys using minnows.
