Dave B. ----The campground that I am talking about in Mackinaw is called Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground and is on US 23 about 4-5 miles south of town. It is by no means 'cheesy' but it is huge. They have all types of sites to accommodate all types of camping, from tents to huge 40 ft triple slide deisel pusher motorhomes. It is on the lake and lots of activities for the family. Not to mention that you are only minutes away from town/tourist trap/fudge and more fudge.

Just checked out the Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground. That place looks really nice. It is huge and cheap too!! That's the kind of place I like. Thanks for the tip!!

I would love to stay at the Straits State Campground but, like all of the good state parks, it books up so fast. We'll get in there one of these days.

I actually totally moved camp in Straits 3 times in one week to finally get right on the waters edge. I was far younger and it was a lot of work. That was before the computerized reservation system and you could actually, physically pick your spot.

Rifle river campground is a great place to camp on holidays, few campsites for as large as the park is and it has alot of swimming lakes. There are alot of private campgrounds in the state that have alot to offer. Ortonville recreation area has a campground and there are also alot of out of the way county parks that are not well known.

Try camping in Memory Lake Park in downtown Grantsburg, Wi. on the third weekend in July. Waking up to the sound of screaming sled engines skipping across the water...music to my ears (but makes it hard to sleep off that hangover!!)

I've heard some pretty cool stories about camping at Grantsburg on that weekend. Nothing that can be shared on this site though.

The real fun in Grantsburg happened before 2000, before the electric/water hookups and fancy bathroom/shower house. Everyone either stayed in tents or relic motorhomes, not top of the line 5th wheels and pull behinds. It was fun to lounge around watching the races with your favorite beverage that you brought from home, and then take a quick dip in the Wood River. Now, all beverages must be bought onsite, the areas to camp are marked off, and they frown on any swimming. The nightlife that weekend is still TOPNOTCH!!!
