Favorite mid layer jacket?

Any decent fleece from chinamart or the likes will work. Fleece is fleece. IMO, I see no reason to spend big money on a mid layer. Base layer and shell yes, mid layer fleece, no.

I just ordered one from Cabelas that is polartec 300, which is supposedly very warm fleece. I haven't used it on the trail yet. I am hoping it works out well, since I am using an insulated shell now. I have looked into the warmer versions from klim and motorfist. They both look good, but I need a tall size for jackets and they don't offer those for their midlayers.

If you go to polartec.com, you can get some ideas of what different kinds of fleece are out there. Some are warmer than others, some breath better, some offer more wind resistance. The stuff from wallyworld might all be the same, hard for me to tell.

X2 All depends on your core temp & if you wear protection. For me sixsixone with core protector with spine guard & back thing keeps me plenty warm with jacket & no lining. The fleece 3 in one stays in my saddle bags for very cold days & core protector is midlayer that breaths well. Now days all fleece is pretty good so no need to spend big bucks.:)

Wear the layer system like this:

The MotorFist N2S base layer

Then the Mid-layer, Hydrophobic.

In almost all conditions this will work. In particular if you are wearing like a Redline jacket or a Superior Jacket.

IF....And I mean so cold that you are on a mission to see if you are really a man.....wear the Hydrophobic jacket/pant nd the Turnagain fleece pant/jacket WITH the Redline or Superior jacket/bib. If you are still cold with this set up....call us.

We will give you a trophy for courage and possibly more free gear to keep you warmer!!

Motorfist - I just picked up some rekon bibs pre-owned. This is my first set of non-insulated bibs. What is your recommendation for midlayer with these bibs if you are trail riding in cold weather? Thanks. Would the turnagain pants generally work with a base layer?

I have a mid layer Motorfist jacket. Its pretty nice, though I havent worn it sledding yet. I dont think I will be cold with it, a base layer( I wear super thin base layers) and the Motorfist shell, except in super cold maybe. -15* F.

LAst year I wore the same base layer with cheap generic fleece, and the Motorfist jacket is warmer than the cheap fleece.

Thanks...which midlayer and shell do you use? I bought the rekon bibs as I found a great price on them used. I have been using 10+ year old yamaha bibs with thinsulate and a cheap old navy fleece for a midlayer. I haven't used the motorfist bibs yet, but they seem to be very well made. Just concerned how warm they will be without any built in insulation.

To answer both bib questions....

First off you made a smart move to go uninsulated IMO. They perform better and are more comfy.

Use a baselayer and the Turnagain you will be fine. The Turnagain is a VERY effecient fleece for keeping the heat in.

The First thing to have is a Base layer. Like the N2S. Without a doubt. A must have.

The Hydrophobic midlayer and the N2S will be fine for almost all conditions when worn together.

If it gets really cold go to the Turnagain, which is techincally an outer layer, and the addition of another base or mid layer will get you through when it is so cold that you are testing manhood.

BTW the Rekon bib HAS a pretty thick fleece that covers the seat area. Reach in on those bibs and you can feel the fleece that is behind the mesh in the butt. It is as thick as a Hydrophobic fleece midlayer by itself. It's an added bonus for cold weather riding :)

I have a Rekon shell jacket, sidehill shell bibs, and the Hydrophobic midlayer. Its not the turnagain midlayer. I liked the fit of the sidehill bibs better than the rekon for my body. And didnt want pants for powder riding.

I also have the other "big name" brand. I like them both, but for my body shape, I think the Motorfist just fits my body better. But they are both excellent, and I will use both.

p.s. I just use cheap fleece pants for midlayer pants. I got a pretty good deal on the MF midlayer jacket at Haydays, thats why I got it. Otherwise I would just use cheap fleece top as a midlayer. The only bad thing about cheap fleece is its not windproof. Otherwise its fine for me. But with a good outer layer, the midlayer doesnt need to be windproof. Just my results anyway.

Thanks for the tips. Can't wait to try out the rekon bibs this year. I am impressed by the gear so far. I will probably try out the midlayers I have and then buy the Turnagain pants if I do end up cold. I also picked up the N2S base layer bottom at the end of the season also - seems like good quality as well.

As a suggestion to you, I did buy a turnagain fleece jacket last year, but I ended up having to return it. If you offered a tall size, I would have kept it for sure - really liked it, just too short. Hopefully that's something you can offer at some point in the future.

Glad to hear you like the motorfist gear. The rekon bibs I bought used seem just a touch smaller than I would prefer (but since they were preowned they will work), but the quality seems very good so I'm looking forward to trying them out.

I find the Turnagain pants to work great for snowmobiling. I ride some trails and mostly back country and I have always felt warm on the trail and never to hot in the woods. I find when I am digging out the sled I sweat a lot and the way the pants are built makes it so they don't feel like they are sticking to your legs. Other fleece I have worn seem to do this to me. Pain in the butt when that happens. :)

I found this fall that they work great under my motorcycle gear too.

We did fix it on the length. I have a long torso too. All the new jackets are generally longer.
