First on the snow?

Years ago a local bar where I grew up had a guest book for all snowmobilers to sign. It was a little contest in the area to see who could be the first one there on a sled every year. I don't remember what the day or year was, but I remember coming home from church one Suday at noon and my dad and I saying there was enough snow on the "government trail" (road) to go sign the book. It was only a little over a mile from home to this little bar. My dad and I left home about the same time, but I beat him there, not before sliding into the stop sign on the corner in front of the bar. I think that was the only year that I was first to sign the guest book. The last year that they were in business, before they retired, I made sure to be the last to sign the book. The conditions were terrible and the ice went out on the river I had to cross the next day.

The next people to own the bar were anti-sledders and it was never the same, and they were only in business a short time because of it.

These are good old memories.

Just wondering if anyone has a little something like this in your neighborhood.

Vansville has a sign in book. I don't think a big deal is made as to who is first for the season, but I can lay claim to that about 8 years ago. Rode the Tuesday night before Thanksgiving.

Like the idea, BUT.... I was already on my sled. Sitting on it, starting it, talking to it, shining it up, cussing at it, spending money on it, staring at it, showing it to guy's at work, telling my son how great it is ect.... When I was younger I would even pull the skags off and run it around the yard as part of my lawn preforation program ( LOL ) I just had to do something. I'm ready for snow !

It was Prochnow's Bar on the corner of Hwys. A and H, about 20-25 miles northwest of Wausau. It was a small bar, but a big stop for sledders. Earl and Alice loved snowmobilers. Will never forget them.

Oh how we remember those days well, Earl and Alice were great promoters, and you could always count on Earl to be open for a late nite snack or nitecap.
