Garmin and SledGPS.com

We recently purchased a Garmin GPS unit for our trip to the UP. The chip I purchased for the Garmin was from Sledgps.com. It was $50 for the Midwest region that includes WI and MI among some other states that I won't ever use. Shipping is free for the chip.

I was very happy with the Garmin AND the SledGPS software. It is very useful with point of interest locations for gas/food/lodging. It is also a great safety feature to always know where you're at on the trail. Another great benefit is that you don't have to pull out your map and try to fold it back into your pocket.

I had a question about the SledGPS chip and their customer service is phenomenal. Send them an email and they reply within 2-3 minutes.

Some people haven't had the best things to say about GPS for snowmobiling, but in my opinion is a great tool to have that works very well, especially with the Garmin and SledGPS.com combo. These will become increasingly popular in years to come.

Anyone used both sledgps and red pine mapping? I have used red pine mapping, but was interested if anyone has used both to see what seems to work better.

Bought the same set-up for my father last Christmas and we absolutely love it and the product support from both Garmin and SledGPS!

I work for Wood County, Wis as GIS Specialist making maps and such. Our paper maps were updated again this year and while doing so I thought I would try and make the data availible for people to plug into their Garmins. I personally dont have a GPS so I have no way of knowing what the data really looks like when imported...that's where you guys come in. Could someone download the GPX file from our website and let me know if it's worth having out there. Here's the link and the file is about half way down just below the pdf version. http://www.co.wood.wi.us/Departments/Parks/Snowmobiling.aspx

Snowshoe,
Tried to take a look at the file you have but I encountered a 404 error. Also, the gpx extension is not just limited to Garmin devices so you can remove that. Gpx is the standard file extension now for "most" newer devices. If you wish you can check to see how your system looks by downloading Google Earth, go to open, change the file that you want from kml/kmz to .gpx and you will be able to see how it looks. That's what I do to verify that everything looks good on the data I download from my gpses and from GpsSledmaps. I make my own maps for the local area piecing together different sections of what folks have uploaded and my own data.

Right click the link and save as.

Firefox is associating the extension with a web content file instead of a download, thus giving users the 404 message.

Still no go on my end, using I.E. and when I right click it says internet explorer encountered an error that the file wasn't found.

Data looks good!! Threw it through the ringer a bit and then opened it in Google Earth and I have a trail system. I'm not really sure where it all goes as i didn't compare it to the .pdf.

I did not know that you could load these maps in to Google Maps. That is so cool. I have to give it a try.

A friend of mine has a garmin. He bought snowmobile trail map of U.P. from a company named vvmapping. We have been very happy with the quality of their maps. They release updates to the maps on a regular basis and I'm sure you get access to them when you purchase from them. I am his technical service so I don't know how well their cust service is.

Not to get off topic too far, but I use the Google Earth to plan a trip or more importantly try to plan reroutes for our trails. Also, it comes in handy when filling out forms to the DNR so that I can highlight the section and location in relation to maps. We also sent our trail data to the county property guys and they imported it into their program and sent us a pdf of land owners along the trail, that really helped to get our sheets correct.
