gas gauge on 06 cat

All the parts of my gas gauge that are in the tank (float and rods that the float moves on) fell off this weekend. I was able to get the parts out of the tank, but is that gauge toasted, or can it be put back together? Just trying to get info before I start to work on it. Also anyone know how the gauge itself comes off of the tank? Is there a nut, a clip?

thanks all

I had mine fall off in the tank too. Mine was on a 2002 zl600. Yours sounds the same though. The gage is held onto the tank with a rubber gasket that can be reused. It takes a bit of prying to get it to pop off. You can reuse all the pieces. One recommendation I have is to take a sharp razor blade and put a little bur on each of the float guides where they connect to the gage. This will prevent it from falling off again.

It sounds like you are saying the gas gauge itself is just a "pressed fit" into the tank itself......is that correct?

thanks

yes that is correct just a rubber gasket.I had it happen on a f7 but I knocked it off when pulling fuel pump but it was not much of a bump a few moguls she would have fallen on her own.the notch sounds like a good idea I just coated ends with permatex and stuck back in with gauge still in the tank but I know from another they are pressure fit

That must be a common problem with this vintage. Mine fell off on a CF 7 too. Got the stuff out of the tank but haven't fixed it yet..... I just watch the tripometer a little closer.

Oh Oh, The wifes fuel gauge needle is spinning 360 degrees and doesn't work. Is this the sign that its about to fall apart?
