Getting The Smell Out

One of the things I like to sell on eBay is old snowmobile suits. Over the years now I have had several that have this "Barnyard" smell to them. At first I thought the previous owner must have been a farmer but now realize it must be something used in the manufacturing back in the 70's. I have a ladies John Deere jacket and bibs with the tags still on but has that smell and pretty strongly at that. I have hung them outside for several days and used Frebreze but that didn't seem to help much. Anything else I can try?

Go for a ride on an old John deere sled, wear the suit, and dump a little extra oil in the gas. Within an hour the suit should smell allot different and might have that 2smoke smell that sledders like.

I would try washing them as well. Just use mild detergent and cold water. Then, machine dry on medium. I realize one of them has the tags on it. I would suggest you not wash that one, and instead just hang it outside for many days and cold nights. If the smell doesn't leave-how much more will it sell for with tags on it and reeking vs no tags and smelling good? I know mostly these are used for jalopy runs and shows, so maybe the odor won't matter to any potential buyer. I've had great luck buying and washing old snowmobile clothing and then selling them for good money.

No old John Deere sled available and while I don't mind "Cross Dressing" wearing a JD jacket while riding a Poo, wearing a ladies jacket that's too small is pushing it a little to far. :)

I guess it could be mildew interacting with something used in the manufacturing but the smell is very different than usual mildew. Seems like it may be just as hard to get rid of though. I think I will try running it through the wash machine once or twice.

Try "Odaban" spray. I get it at Sam's Club. Had to use it on the "Seniors" stuff when they were living with us. Many Senior Centers use it routinely in their wash loads (you know that grandparent smell I'm talking about). Found a number of other places to use it since the pets are still around the house.
