I am looking at a 2010 GMC P U. 5.7 with 3.08 rear end. I pull once in a while. Mostly soft farm roads and farm work. Some say with the 6 speed trany I will never notice the taller gears.--- any thoughts?

Not a 5.7 but if you look up gear ratios for each gear 3.08s are better with the 6 SPD for towing than 3.73 and a 4 SPD

I agree. If you are not towing heavy loads down the highway the 3.08 will be fine.

3.08 is the default ratio with the 5.3L engine and 6L80 6-sp trans. No charge upgrade to 3.42 can be ordered. 3.73 was only available with the Max Trailering Pkg and 6.2L V8.

I have a 06 chevy with a 5.3 and the smaller geared rear end , I believe 3.08 or 3.23 ?? Anyway when I bought the truck at the time didn't realize they had higher geared rear ends was just wanting a 5.3 better on gas but a 6.0 bigger but not as good on gas but better for heavy loads . I pull a 4 place open and have no problems, talked to the engineers in Canada and they told me to use the tow mode but drive leave the over drive off or use drive mode. A lot less down shifting and winding on the trans. I would agree a 3.73 or bigger would be a better set up but knock on wood no problems . Only thing with chevy is had wheel bearing go out 2 times on front left. Good luck on your new truck !

3.08's with the 6 speed trans end up shifting all the time, not enough rpm's on the road. Find on with 3.42's. Dealers that wanted happy customers sold 'em with 3.42's

the 3.08s and 6 spd are better for towing than my 3.42 and 4 spd and i got over 33" tires and still tow an enclosed 4 place just fine, but the torque converter never locks :)

Thanks for the help! yes on the 5.3 eng. I use an 8 ft bed allot but not usually heavy loads. I found 2 (within driving distance) with an 8 ft box in the 1/2 ton and bought the one with less miles.
