Gogebic, Copper Harbor and Everything in Between

This past weekend was the annual guys trip to da Yoop. We based at a house on Gogebic down near the lodge and those that needed sleds rented from Timberline. Here's a brief synopsis:

Friday - took 13N from Bergland, around Greenland and on into Twin Lakes. Lunch at the Parkview took over 2 hours for a few burgers and sandwiches which really set us back. We motored up 3 to the Bridge and stayed on it until the 134 cut off. Took that into Copper Harbor and spent the night at the Mariner (dinner, drinks and motel rooms). Had to skip the run to Gay due to the long stop at lunch.

Saturday - took the trail out to High Rock, down to Lac La Belle, eagle harbor loop, down 3 to 17, across the bridge, Freda Loop and into Twin Lakes for lunch...this time at Omer's (just down the street from Krupp's). Man that place is great! Good food, nice setting, people are great and they had us in and out in no time. Last routes of the day had us on 3 to 13 back to Bergland and the Bay Bar. A few sodas there, met the new owners (very nice people) and we ripped the lake home.

Sunday - took 1S to Marenisco, 2E to 13N and took that to the Root. Ripped the lake up to Bergland, 13N to 101 to 12 and into White Pine for lunch at the Konteka. Continued up 1 to Lake of the Clouds, 11S to 102 and back into Bergland to return the sleds. Back to the house for the Super Bowl!

All told 515 miles in 3 days ain't too shabby. Only really rough part was on 3 up in the Keweenaw and it was the same spot both days. Probably a few miles worth so really nothing to complain about. Thanks to all the groomers up there who did a great job and allowed us to have a fun trip and not worry about our backs! Obviously more snow to the north but the south is great as well. Anything over the border should be good to go for awhile. A solid ice base and the wet snow today/tonight will only help!

Lastly, thanks to Mark Han(s)on and the crew at Timberline Sports! Great sleds, friendly people and service is top notch.
Needless to say we can't wait for next years trip...only 11.99 months to go!

Glad you had a good time.

Would you mind sharing the section of 3 was rough?

Thanks!

When we were up there all last week, I noticed the only rough spot was about 2 miles either side and including the re-route. And it was everytime we went through there. Otherwise everything else was darn near perfection in the Keweenaw.

It was a great weekend for riding and sounds like you covered a fair amount of ground out there. With regards to Omers, I want to second your praises as we paid our first visit there as well on Saturday afternoon. The service was fantastic, food was great, and they kept the process moving for us which was much appreciated. I wish the owners all the best and look forwarded to making this a regular stop. If you haven't been to Omers yet, our group highly recommends you give it a shot.

I would agree with Iowasledder...can't exactly pin point but it looks like it was some sort of re-route on 3 as I don't ever remember that section before. I'll ask the other guys and see if they had a more exact location.

bonnevier or anyone else, trail #102 to Bergland was good? Last time we were on that trail a couple years ago it was brutal due to early season water & no grooming. Just want to confirm it's all good before we take it. Thanks.

We found 102 brutal several weeks ago. It wasn't due to water, just not groomed in a long time. It is one of our favorites.

Everthing north of the bridge was a 10 out of 10 till noon....dropped to a 8 out of 10 after lunch...fantastic riding...broke trail on a groomed trail and 6in of fresh for the entire length of 124 and 133

I couldn't believe what kind of shape 133 was last week between Gay and Lac La Belle! That trail was awesome. We rode that 3 times it was that good! And 132 from LLB to 3 was unbelievable! I still have a smile on my face from last week!

I will basically be re-doing your trip this weekend, leave tomorrow. Looks like we picked a good time to come up with the freshie fresh dropping as I type this. (I planned this back in August so really a crap shoot on timing so far back) Sled gods are looking out, can't wait. Be with a big group (9) so introduce yourselves if anyone else is up there the 9-12th.

Curious about why it was so slow at the Parkview because we we're glad to hear it was reopened, was it busy or is the service just real bad?

102 on Sunday afternoon was good...no water holes and low traffic. Could only get better with the snow they got today

If you were sitting in the Krupp's lot looking at the trail, it's about 1/2 mile straight down the road. It's at the golf course

I think they were fairly busy but we were also ignored for 20 mins before anyone came over. I'm sure we'll try them again at some point.

Yes, as bonnevier said:

Okay, y'all got my curiosity up.

As I suspected, it is in fact the former Wyandotte Hills Golf Course and Resort, and it even has a new web site — it was incredibly hard to find, but for the record, here 'tis: (click →) Omer's Wyandotte Hills Golf Course and Resort (Check out the menu too.)

It's not the most sophisticated web site in the world; crude, even ('tis obviously a work in progress), so if you're interested in the cabins, use the small text link at the top of the page, as the one in the big display at the bottom of the home page doesn't work!

There's also a (click →) Omer's farcebook page, for those that are into that.

The trails were all great, with the exception of that short section of 3. It's the section from the Mohawk business spur, south to the 17 split. I don't know if it's the snow, the base, or the grooming equipment, but it just wouldn't hold a groom.

The snow even looked different at the edges, like potato sized clumps were coming out from under the skid. Considering the conditions changed right at the point where one groomer goes north from Mohawk, and the other goes south, it had me thinking it must be something to do with the skid. I ride a snowmobile, and have never driven a groomer, so take my opinion for what it's worth.

Most importantly, thanks to all the groomers for their hard work! I truly enjoyed the awesome trails!

FYI; they put a small "realty type" sign at the trail stop sign saying to turn to get to their property near the Krupps turn-off but you turn the opposite way.

I heard somebody bought some land and closed the trail. So it was re routed and has been a little rough in that spot all year
