Going to the Hurons, need advice.

Like I said, I'm very new to the area. I just moved here from northern Maine and I love the Keweenaw so much so far. I'm also super intrigued to go explore the Hurons...but I don't really have any idea which roads are the best...on my map they all look almost like trails that meander around aimlessly.

Basically just would be interested in hearing a list of roads to take for a good day trip.

Thanks!

The conditions of the roads can change daily. 4x4 is a must on a lot of the roads. We go from La'nce to Big Bay and back a few times a year. There are some mellow ways in if you head in from Finns Bar. The way we go requires big tires, winch and not afraid of pinstripes. Not sure what you are driving?

See the following link for a summary of the "main" roads to access the Hurons area:

https://blog.jacobemerick.com/hiking/driving-through-the-huron-mountains/

Note: in the heart of the Hurons, even these "main" roads are unmarked, there is next to no cell phone service (unless you climb up one of the higher "mountains"), and extremely few of the "destinations" i.e. waterfalls/mountains/outlooks are marked.

Needless to say, GPS is basically a necessity...

Currently there is a consderable amount of construction in Port Huron making it diffcult to get to the hotels in the Water Street area. I would suggest looking at the Quality Inn, which is close to the main North & South route (Pine Grove Ave) through Port Huron and up to Fort Gratiot Twp (shopping, restaurants etc).

The Thomas Edison Inn would be another potential lodging choice with great views of the Blue Water Bridge area and the St. Clair River, however, there is a lot of uncertainty about the Edison Inn as it was recently sold and is supposed to be upgraded to a new hotel/convention center and not sure how long it will remain open.

In any event I think you will need a car to get around. Not sure what your interests are in Port Huron so hard to provide any advice there.

Some good spots to eat would include The Quay Street Brewery (on the Black River) the Vintage Tavern (upstairs has a great view), Fuel, Casey's Pizza (new additon to the facility which was nicely done) Pompeii's for Italian food.

All of those places are located in the general downtown area, but as mentioned there really aren't any downtown hotels worth mentioning.

Also of note, the wet August and September have left a lot of the deep rutted roads in the lower areas very wet. imo, the best way to see the Huron's this time of the year is on a quad. The roads are rocky, muddy, not marked well, and not exactly the place you'd want to get stranded, not knowing the area.

Very remote area and having the ability to navigate is a must. Roads are not marked and whats on the map may no longer exist. Some old roads have beaver ponds close by and frequently see 20"+ of water on them and others get pretty washed out. You can always start with a trip out to the mouth of the Huron River, out to Mt. Arvon and check out a few waterfalls on the Western Side. Dual Sports are awesome for exploration. You can cover ground in a hury and not get beat up doing it.

There is a bridge out on Dodge City RD. We didn't want to back track 8 miles too AAA. We ended up just driving through the river. A lot of beaver damns up that way. Big sections of the sled trail are under water in the summer.

I really good road ride would be go up 510 to GGT and GGA aka THE RED ROAD....head west on GGA to silver lake...go round there...all that from US41 will be awesome....then from there you can decide to head toward mount huron without having to navigate thru WOODTICs water filled muddy ruts....I use a ATV instead of a pickup incase a hole gets 4 feet deep....which it does...off the 510 is the Wilson truck trail...that's awesome too if they are not loggin in there and have the road open

I know the group you speak of. That run is made the first or second weekend of April. Not a family type of run, so I don't go with them much. Things get nuts by noon with that group. Sledding with them can be just *** bad.

what an understatement that is...LMAO....they the dirty dozen from Romeoville....I have wanted to kill them on several occasions....and then stop and have a beer with them on other occasions....its a love hate relationship....and I am really disappointed I cannot ream your azz for their shortcomings in the frontal lobe area since your not belonging to that 4x4 group.....the only true given is they produce 90% of all trash left in the woods from skanee up ford road to the tree and then east on the triple AAA to their camp during the sled truck transition period....that's the part I hate about em......they litter the woods more than homey does on US12/20 going thru gary Indiana...and believe me...its a lot...I mean ALOT of trash....carry on there TIC....and pass it on to them.....take a tad back out of the woods in the back o those trucks instead of just winging it out the winder every mile or so and ill look the other way on the 3000 trees that are run over in the process...ah I feel better now....carry on

PS...now you all know who is generating that trash in the entire huron mountain area and maybe you can help me pressure em as well to clean up dare act a tad....the eyes are upon you....LOL

I run with guys from Covington/Sidnaw area. You described the white Trash group from Baraga/ La'nce area. You left the drugs, unsafe gun shooting out of your.story.The good thing is their trucks are broke/ destroyed by the end of April. So you don't see much of them the rest of the summer. I picture their camp being that old bus on Dodge city road.
