Here is a couple pictures of my trip to Grand Marais, MN on 3/6 - 3/8/09.
Day1 - Gunflint trail through BWCA to the Canada border. We also ran to Lusten for dinner.
Day2 - Down North Trail shore to just past Silver Bay. The trails dropped from very good to poor in a 2 miles strech just outside Silver Bay.
Day3 - Rode and GPS mapped all the entire Grand Portage trails system. Make sure to ride to the trail to the border. There are two very cool unmarked yet groomed trails with GREAT views.

Here is a shoot showing the edge of the big fire. The US side was ok but the Canada was completely burnt.

Dave,
$5k is pretty steep. Are you guys going back up to the North Shore one more time this year or are you done.
jlemieu1 - nice photos. Hoping to get back up there this weekend or next. One last ride for the season.

canoepaddler -- There is an access trails that goes through the BWCA at Saganaga Lake. We even keep it legal and filled out the Day Use permit at the Saganaga Lake customs point (It is on the west side of the lake about a 1/4 mile up). You can ride there on the marked trails. Ride off those trails can cause the penalties you are talking about.

samc -- unfornately I need to call it a season unless we get enough to ride in the Twin Cites. It should be golden up there after today's storm which the TC weather people are calling for 12+. You really should go. I would recommend Grand Marais as a starting point. The snow should be good in all directions.

jlemieu1 - Thank you for clarifying that, since some people think it's cool to ride anywhere in the BWCA, and it's NOT. Sounds like you're on top of things. Just curious, in that first link, they say the sled has to be 40" wide or narrower..like they are only grandfathering in the old sleds. Do they ignore that restriction or is that just an old printing of the regulations?

Scott - I sure hope to get up there at least one more time. The current plan is later this week, but now I'm undecided between this week or next week. The way we ride, I want to make sure they have time to get the trails groomed again after they get that new 12" of snow coming today and tonight up there. How about you guys? Weren't you talking about maybe going up sometime too, or did you do that already?

Jlemieu1,
Be sure to send your Grand Portage Tracks to

http://gpssledmaps.com/maps/mn.php

Ryan will add them to the next update. Plus, you'll get a complementary copy, when the tracks are used, of the Full Version Update!

Looks like a great time. That whole area is my favorite place to ride. (Grand Portage in particular) Maybe next season. Thanks for sharing.

I was planning on posting it over to gpssledmaps.com. I just need to spend a little cleaning up the waypoint of double tracks. I bought the paid version before I left as was little bummed that system was not on there.

I am heading up there in a couple weeks and I am wondering if you know how many miles it is round trip from grand marais to the trustle inn. Also is it hard to find?

Here is my attempt below at stitched photos. Does anyone know a why to display images on a thread without uploading them to the server?
