I agree with 71....the vast majority of people I talk to agree that you should get it out of there as soon as possible. If you have ever looked at the tiny lines of aluminum in the gaskets, you would understand that even the smallest amount of corrosion can eat them enough to leak. This is a design problem which prior models never worried about. In other words, somebody with a diploma goofed up.
The Dex-cool doesn't seem to stand up to the huge temp swings over time. It also is very very conducive to clogging up unless you use distilled water to mix with it. It also does a poor job over the long haul of lubricating the water pump which is why GM water pumps don't last nearly as long as they used to.
Of course admitting that the newly invented wheel isn't quite as good as they thought it would-- is NOT an option for GM and like the intake manifold problems, better to deny culpability and stall off and drag out a lawsuit for a decade or two and then settle out of court for those who still own the machine past a decade...or saved the corrective paid receipts, than to handle the expense of a recall.
Sadly this has cost GM plenty...not that any other company isn't almost as bad at this, what hurts most is the loyal (like me) pay the price for being loyal.
Do yourself a favor and get that stuff out of there. And for heaven sakes, get that gasket fixed...you have been smelling that stuff cook for weeks, did you think that something wasn't wrong? Walk thru a parking lot on a hot day and smell those older GM's coolant leaking...could make a fortune plunking mechanical business cards on windshields telling people about the problems they have but don't realize.
Oh, and yes you can get 95% of the coolant out when flushing. That's what they make garden hoses for...water is cheap, disconnect, pull the thermostat and flush away...run the motor some and flush some more. What little bit gets left behind won't cause any issues.
Anyone who says....71 is nuts because he is only a mechanic and because THEY have never had a problem, is like a smoker who says..."see, I never got cancer....so it must not be true..." Life is always better if you have luck on your side....for the rest of us.....grin and bare it...... and everyone's luck runs out sooner or later. Course you can just unload the car/truck before the problems surface...but then that's sort of expensive too, eh?
