Grooming between Calumet and Mohawk???

The question is were is it? For the last 3 yrs this is the worst trail I have ever been on Twin Lakes on a BAD day is better than this section. (I travel this weekdays as well so its not just a weekend thing). I know it is a heavy traffic area. It seems to me that it never gets touched. We saw 3 groomers out yesterday all were north of Vansville. I don't understand how the rest of the trails can be in good to great condition and this 10 mile section is POOR at best. Someone is missing this section badly. The business in the area need to speak up when they hear the same things. When the trails are in this condition people start heading off trail on private property and in this stretch it is not easy to be off trail and be legal. Yesterday I could have made a killing selling pain meds. Maybe this is the way to slow trail speeds down.

On a huge positive note, Bear Belly had a huge turnout for John Dee bar tending. He does a great job and sacrificed a great day to help others.

if you know what club it is you can ask them if it is being groomed or how often. Best to get an answer right from the source.

I 2nd that, when I was up two weeks ago I was told by the owners of the Vansville, that the section of the trail is very rocky and takes alot of snow before they can groom, Not sure if their still not grooming it as it looks like the area got lots of snow.

Been riding the Keweenaw for three years now and have always been amazed how much of a contrast this section can be to the rest of the system. There could be a foot base on every other trail and this stretch could still be marginal.

Its a good thing the Whitehouse inn has such excellent service or we would've turned around and headed back to Centennial a mile into that crap last night. We didn't do more than about 15 mph from calumet to mohawk. We were having pretty good luck (aka beating the snot out of ourselves/machines) skipping over the bumps most of the day on friday and saturday, but that section was way to bad.

That section of trail aside, i very much enjoyed my first time riding in the UP and will definitely be back.

Last time we were up we ate lunch at Slims. We overheard a couple locals talking about this very thing. According to them the trail gets whooped up in the summer w/atv traffic and they don't grade it off before winter,so it takes a LOT more snow to smooth it out......

Overheard one of the Keweenaw county commissioners and ATV club members say that they were going to do a fair amount of grading this spring in an attempt to fix these issues.

Heard the same thing from the owners of the Vansville. When they heard us talking about how bad that section was.

We were up with ATV's this last summer for the first time and spend around 4 weeks a winter on sleds in the area and I can vouch that the some if not the majority of the common rough stretches on sleds are the roughest areas on ATV's. This area around Calumet really stood out to us last summer and it made sense when you see it in the summer. I hope they grade that out for both ATV and sledding sake.
