I bought two Garmin GPS mount kits that came with a wire harness that had bare red/black wires, the converter and the Garmin plug all in one. I'm seraching the web for a bare wire, wire harness. Will post a link if I can find one.
Should have asked Hoosier.....which model Garmin?
Will this work for you?

Here is the long story;
There are 2 different cables used to power the Garmin.
1. Powers up the Garmin, recharges the battery, and send it into "Data Mode" (data mode for transferring maps, route/track data, pictures etc.)
2. Powers up the Garmin, recharges the battery, and send it into "Map or Navigation Mode" (Map mode is self explanatory)
What will happen with the cord described in the link? Choice 1. or Choice 2, certainly 2 is what is wanted.
I do not know, the description offer no details.
But wait, there is more;
Remember in a USB cable there are 4 conductors, to power up we only need 2.
The cable described in 1 is what is called a straight cable, Pin 1 goes to Pin 1, Pin 2 goes to Pin 2, and so on.
The cable described in 2 is different, one of the conductors has a tiny resistor that goes to +power. This signals the Garmin to go into the Map Mode.
Garmin is the only device that does this.
Remember this power device (shown in the link) is used for many other electronics, phones, cameras.
At home, find a cable (camera has one) USB to mini USB, plug it into the USB on you computer, then into the Garmin. It will go into Data Mode.
When you purchased a Garmin, it will come with a Power cord, this Power cord comes with a plug that goes into a cigarette lighter.
You know that using this cable it will go into Map Mode, it is special.
The only reason that Garmin does this is to sell cables
Do they sell these special cords, not made by Garmin?, yes!
Let me be clear, I do not know if this cable will work or will not work. (see link).
