Actually, it was for a short time.
When the Michigan Territory was first established in 1805, it included only the Lower Peninsula and the eastern portion of the Upper Peninsula. In 1819, the territory was expanded to include the remainder of the Upper Peninsula, all of what later became Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota (previously included in the Indiana and Illinois Territories). When Michigan applied for statehood in the 1830s, the proposal corresponded to the original territorial boundaries.

From what I have understood many considered Toledo and northern Ohio to be in Michigan and in DC they swapped the UP for Ohio to get Toledo.

If it tickles your fancy look into how the Native Americans were given Cleveland OH area then executed and driven out during the USA expansion era. Imo there had to be a better solution. They call the baseball team the Cleveland Indians for good reason.

Michigan and Ohio were fighting over the "Toledo strip" as it was called. The Upper Pennisula was Michigan's consolation prize. Wasn't seen as good trade until the full comprehension of lumber, copper, and iron were taken into account.

It still should be WI. I would think all the fine folks in the UP would like to secede from the tyranny of all the bureaucratic BS of MI....be sorta reborn...lol

Interesting facts about 1 UP family. The Cohodas brothers. These Jewish brothers immigrated to the US in the early 1900’s from Russia. They landed in Chicago and migrated north to Menomonee then onto central UP (ultimately Marquette). These young men started selling fruit as that is what their father taught them in Russia.
They ultimately began leveraging fruit from/through Chicago. In a short period of time they became the largest fruit wholesalers in the country. Their investments reached into Lower Michigan with large tracks of fruit producing real estate. They expanded creating land holdings in Yakama Washington. , (Yakama Fruit ring a bell?). Now with all this wealth, living in the UP, they began getting into banking. By the 1970’s they owned pretty much all the banks throughout the UP, Michigan Financial (where this one got his start in finance).
For you Packer fans - in the 1950’s and forward the Cohodas brothers saw the locals in Green Bay were not supporting the team so they bought large blocks of tickets and handed them out to employees and local Yoopers. This way the stadium continued to have people in it cheering the team on.
