Heat Exchanger

Went out in grayling area saturday and within ten miles had some studs pull through and put a pretty good gash in the front heat exchanger. I am putting a new track on and have had some people tell me to weld the heat exchanger and some say your crazy you gotta replace it. Anyone out there with any experiences of this and if you were able to weld? I would much rather prefer to weld, alot less expensive and alot less labor into the sled but if its not going to work then im gonna have to replace it. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

I've got 2 sleds I welded the front heat exchanger on and they've both held up. Had some pretty huge gashes. Make sure to blow all the coolant out before you weld it. Both were 99 xc and xc sp 700s.

Heat exchangers are welded together to start with, I would have it welded just grind the fin in the area which is damaged so you have a nice flat surface and take it in, make sure the system is drained also otherwise it will build pressure from the coolant boiling. Also make sure you pressure test it before putting the skid back in even if it is just running it until it gets up to temp or go to autozone and renting a pressure tester.

I just held a blow gun in the coolant bottle and held a rag around it to pressure test it LOL
