Heated Shields and glasses

I would like to get some feedback on those of you with heated shields. Are you able to ride without your face mask on? Is the heated shield enough to keep your glasses clear. My grandson just recieved his safety certificate and will start riding this year. He wears glasses and I want to make sure we get him set up right so he is not fighting fogging glasses. Someone suggested getting a heated shield and I'm not sure that will help with fogging glasses especially on a youth. Any feedback appreciated.

Glasses

I wear glasses and use a Polaris AF-1 Full face helmet. I very seldom have problems with the fogging. See the other thread on Full face helmets vs Snow cross in Techtalk. We discuss the same issue and compare the two types of helmets and various options. Good luck!

Some type of modular...

I have been riding with glasses for years, either a modular of some type, I am partial to BRP's versions or a sno-cross style helmet with "over the glasses" (otg) goggles. The heated face shield will do nothing for your glasses; you have to stop the breath inside the helmet completely to stop glasses from fogging, even then it sometimes takes a little finesse.

I wear glasses and find the BRP Modular works really well in preventing fogging of my glasses. However, it can be a cold helmet. It works very well for me down to about 5 degrees, but can become a problem after that for both glasses fogging and being cold with air leaks. I'm guessing you may not be out that cold with your Grandson anyway.

Having said that, size may be an issue if an adult small is too large for him or if the face masks don't fit his face well.

My son is 13 and is completely dependent on his glasses. He has worn an HJC Youth full face helmet for years and never had fogging issues as long as the breath gard was in place. The guard isn't fancy but seems to do a good job.

Good luck!

I had an AF-1 helmet that worked great. Except, riding all day and super cold it would start to fog the glasses and the shield eventually. Keeping it cracked helped a little sometimes.

I now have a BRP modular 2. That thing works better as long as the breath guard is set properly. Sometimes a little crack would help. I haven't rode in zero yet with that yet though.

I was thinking of buying the heated shield and seeing if that would help. A buddy of mine did that and said that the heated shield works just enough to help with fogging.

BRP Modular work best to prevent fogging of my glasses. Tell him to crack open visor if fogging & if that fails he is sweating too much layer down.

I might have a modular in good shape that I would let go cheap for your grandson.
It is a MED, these run tight. My son is growing out of it. I also bought a couple for my daughters a few years back on e-bay. You take the gamble of getting a decent shield when you buy ( used ) on e-bay. I had to polish mine with Novus fine scratch remover several times. a replacement shield for the modulars is $109 - $119 something like that.
PM me if your interested, IF he doesn't like it I'll let you return it. I always need extra gear around anyways. Just a thought. I'm not really looking to sell 1.

Yes I can ride without my face mask
Yes the heated shield keeps my glasses clear

Do not let the glasses fog up to begin with and all will be good with the heated shield

A heated shield doesn't help with glasses fogging. It doesn't produce any more heat than just enough on the shield to keep it fog free. Glasses are on their own and much more difficult to keep fog free. My wife and I both wear glasses. I have a BRP Modular helmet and she has a Rodia modular. #1) Make sure there is a tight fit around your nose with the breath mask so moist breath air can't sneak through there. #2) Get breath outside the helmet. This is where the helmet design comes in. Also, open the shield as soon as you stop or at road crossings, any time you don't have the wind blowing through. #3) And probably the most important....control body heat. I sweat easily and really have to watch that. When unloading to ride in the mornings, I don't put my jacket on until I take off. Then, I usually have to leave my jacket and bibs unzipped until I cool down. I also have to usually leave my shield open or cracked during that time too. Then it's just a matter of keeping things under control. When body heat builds...most often in the woods working the twisties, unzip a little or crack the shield if fog starts in at all. Hope this helps. Keeping glasses fog free is easiest when having a good understanding of where the moist heat is coming from and how to control it.
