I don't know if they will be able to tell through blood work if alcohol was involved as the story around hayward is that the only thing they found was his feet. The knowledge that a snowmobile was involved was not known until the next morning when the fire chief saw tracks leading to the cabin. The mans employer identified him to the local newspaper as authorities still cannot positively identify.

....."The victim traveled off a lake onto shore, crashing through an attached deck and into a cabin which caught fire and burned to the ground. "

Wow, insult to injury, cabin burned to the ground???

Confused on the first death, 930 in the am in the parking lot in October
yow..a kid screwing around somehow?

It was a young lady during the safety check ride part of a snomo safety class in Osceola (?), WI. From what I have read and heard, she said that she was familiar with the operation of a snowmobile. She had a helmet on but it was not secured properly. She panicked, pinned the throttle, and hit some type of concrete abutment at 70+ mph. This has led to changes already in the snomo cert process and I'm sure there much more to come. Very sad story. :(

That would make sense...sad to hear but at the same time why don't they have like governors on those sleds for the training courses to prevent stuff like that?

They are usually just regular snowmobiles. Maybe some have them...I don't know. Some have suggested a throttle block or remote shutoff. After the accident, the test ride was "prohibited" statewide.

Because sleds can develop a stuck throttle, everyone should practice a bail-out at slow speeds so that in the event of a run away sled, you will hopefully remember your training. Maybe that isn't what happened here, but with inexperienced riders this should be talked about and practiced if practical.

Seems like it would be a good idea to have a tether on a sled, similar to a jet skis. My Dad's old Yamahas had them, but I don't know if they came that way or were added. I noticed in Wyoming some people added them, but clearly you are more like to fall off your sled out there...

You gotta remember to wear em and they do no good if you're in panic mode and not bailing.

We call it the butt drill. Just bail off onto your butt and back, no feet or you go head over heels. Put a little harness on my little one so if she's riding with me and I fall off, she comes with me and doesn't ride into the trees with the sled.

In Minnesota we "have to mandatorily install" throttle blocks to give the driving part of the "safety certificate" driving test. As a result of this incident, it has been heavily watched. Sadly that little girls mother was there to watch/assist her and was one of the first responders (is employed as a nurse) to the actual scene. God bless us all as we travel the trails. We will be giving our youngsters their test tomorrow and hope to he!! nothing like this EVER happens.;
