Helmet Lens; Anything to remove surface scratches?

I have a couple helmets that are starting to scratched up right in my line of sight.
Is there anything that I can use to buff them out?

Yeah, there is. I bought a buffing wheel kit from an auto parts retailer. Worked great. All you need is a spray bottle of water and an electric drill. Sorry, can't remember the name and I'm certain the box is gone. One other benefit is it's about 1/2 the price of these lens restore creams you see advertised on TV.

guy at NAPA suggested a headlight restorer kit. I'm going with that since that's all they have.

I'm fairly certain the kit that I bought came from NAPA. Like I mentioned, 1/2 the price of the stuff Auto Value had.........

I have tried the head light polish. It seemed to fog very easily after this was done to the lens. In my experience, the shields on helmets are disposable. I typically replace mine every couple of seasons.
Being able to see while snowmobiling = priceless.

I bought the headlight scratch remover kit from Walmart for about $20. Worked great for me. There is enough in that kit to do 50 shields. No issues with fogging for me. Took the scratches right out. I think it is made by McGuires.

I guess get your buffer out.. I can usally find what I need on the internet some where. There is a lot of NOS out there. Just a matter of finding. Last year found replacemetn lens-shields for the yamaha snow force helmet.

Funny you should ask..I started breaking down my shield and got it off its frame,now im gonna order new glass 4 it..2'0 x 4'0 of plexi-glass 50.00 !
I should be able 2 do way better than 42.00 per replacement shield.

How old are the helmets?

After "X" amount of years, you should replace the helmet, some manufacturers recommend every 5-7 years as a rule of thumb.

That's because they are in the business of selling helmets. If a helmet has not taken a firm impact it will still protect WAY longer than that.

The helmet in question is an HJC FG-8. No longer in production and replacements shields all sold out even on the net. It's a XXXL which hardly anybody makes any more (I gots a really big melon.....8 3/8 hat size). Most of the current offerings bite me (some severely) right at the crown of the forehead. This is the helmet I use for brush riding and such.....

I have a HJC, only 2 yrs. old, and had one previous to that, and my only complaint with these helmets is the dual lense shields scratch EASY! I doubt if you are trying to remove scratches from one of these that you'll improve its clarity.

I understand what you say about the life cycle of a helmet, and , sure, the manufacturers are in the business to sell helmets, so it is a personal decision on when to say it's time to replace.

For me, the cost of a new helmet every 5-8 years (one for sledding, one for cycling) is cheap insurance.

Actually, I think my melon is about the same size, helmets are a drag to find.
