Thanks all. As I said I'm a fairly new rider, and due to work/family obligations (and - unbelievably - a relative lack of snow in south/central Minnesota) I don't get to ride often, which means I don't have much of an opportunity to test different helmets in different weather environments. So all of this insight is very helpful.

I confirmed that I have a BRP Modular 3 helmet.

Based on the feedback I read here I think I'm going to properly install the respirator for my son and msyelf, and give that a shot the next few times we go out. If we decide to go on another extended trip away from home and the weather looks dicey, then maybe we'll buy the heated helmets just as a little extra insurance.

I wore 2 totally different helmets this weekend without issues, however, the others that wore them could not see.
For me, waiting to close the visor until moving, and opening before stopping / slowing helps greatly.
"Frog Spit" spray too.

Do both 1 and 2 and your issues will be gone. Heated shield is the only way to go. Its like the heated grips, electric start or reverse on your sled, you wonder why you suffered as long as you did and didn't get it sooner.

BVS is my go to when around 10 deg or less. I do have an electric lens, but only use it with freezing ice. When I am really hot and not moving fast, I get just a bit of fogging, but a slight crack in the helmet clears it right up. Even when really cold, I have not had my air vents freeze up - and I usually only stop when low on fuel.

But, I do prefer my moto cross helmet - lighter, more options for lenses, better vision, sun visor to not take the snow chunks from the rider in front of me and simply more comfortable.

I was involved in a head on collision with a car that resulted in whip lash. On long rides the extra weight of the BVS does seem to make a difference.

I suggest two helmets:).

509 carbon with Scott turbo flow XI and 509 aviators. The 509s have fogged a few times the scotts however have not except when it was -25 besides that zero issues with that combo.
