Help Arctic Cat Burned Down

My wife's 2000 500 ZR burned the Mag piston and a little of the PTO piston. Motor was lean. I can not figure out why. Every one say's check the carb boots and that is where my big question comes up. The outside of the boot does have some weather checking however it is a reed case motor so the boots have a fiber like interior that inserts into the reeds so the weatherchecking of the boots exterior can't go threw to the inside of the boots. Am I correct in this. Please help me out

I find it kinda hard to believe both boots started leaking at the same time causing a burning down on both jugs.
wont like my first thought but could be crank seal pull clutch and see if any oil inside clutch. often if crank pto seal goes bad oil in case will run down crank and seep in to clutch.
I really hope I am not right with my diagnosis

I'm with ezra... hard to believe both did the carb boot thing. Never the less... it must be found " root cause ". I have never burned down a cat... normally they are so fat they have enough oil for days ( LOL ) Obviously not ! See if you can do a leak down test , here is a pic of some basic hardware from menards that you can buy to plug things up. Don't forget to plug off your impulse line. You may need a guage but general rule of thumb is 5#'s for 10 minutes.

no oil on clutch but the mag side burned down the worst so i will pull the flywheel to check for oil from the mag seal.

Is this a carborated motor or is this a EFI motor? If you have a carb motor all it would take is something to plug a jet and lean down a cylinder.Have you taken this apart yet? Pistons and rings also fail from fatigue.

How many miles on the motor? Has it ever had a preemptive ring job? If it is a carb version, the boot on those have been known to check & crack early on, sometimes in an area where you will not see it like the bottom. The billows on that style boot (which is rubber) were a tad on the large side which made it even harder to see splits in between them. I had a 2000 ZL600 carb with that issue, new boot every other year, I just happened to discover this before I had anything happen to the motor. These motors run at a tad higher RPM & really should have a ring job every 3,000 miles as a preventive measure.-Mezz
