I am going to be booking a cabin for 3 months in northern WI. I have narrowed it down to 2 properties but I am strugling to decide which cabin to choose. Both have their advantages. I am looking for input on anything I am missing on advantages and disadvantages of each. Both are the same price. The cabin will be used to entertain customers.
#1: On the Turtle Flambeau Flowage Mercer address not far from a bar/resturant, probly a bit nicer of the 2, Direct TV and Wifi, In the heart of the best snow area of WI
#2 Just off Star Lake and 200 ft from bar/resturant, area has more stops and more services, includes a garage, dvd player and local channels if the starts align, a bit out of the snow belt.

Just looking for others thoughts and input looking to see if I am missing any advantages or disadvantages of each area.

Thanks in advance.

For me the availability of TV and wifi would be a big factor. I could go a week or 2 with out those amenities, but not 3 months. You won't be able to ride all the time, nice to have something to do in the down time.

I realize the garage is nice, but it looks like that is the only thing on that side of the scale. Nicer, Direct TV wifi, heart of the snow belt are all on the other side of the scale.

Are you leaving your sled there? Is there a local place you can store your trailer inside? Do you have an enclosed trailer so if you need to work on them you could? I realize those are all the benefits a garage brings but if you're planning to bring customers there they don't care about the garage, they want snow, TV and being able to check the email so in my mind the place on the flowage wins hands down.

If you are entertaining customers by taking them snowmobiling, do the flowage. Even if mercer area and south have a bad year, most likely you will be able to get to Island Lake and north to find snow. And if the rest of the state has no snow, you will be a Rock Star by being able to find it!

go with the better probability of snow, assuming your entertaining customers who want to sled. If they just want to get away and drink and don't really care to sled then go with the closer to the bar and better amenities.

I HAVE rented for three months on the flowage 3-4 times and have had very good riding. Even with low snow there are lots of places on flowage to go to. From one end of flowage to other end" Horseshoe shaped" is aprox 21 miles of marked trail. At least 3 trails into Mercer that a almost always gromed dayly.

I spend a min of three weeks on flowage, have been going there around 25 years.

I've made many trips to Hurley and depending on what you want to do I would definitely pick the Mercer location. When we rode unless there was a good system snow Mercer was about where the lake effect snow would start to taper off. If you're wanting to be able to put on some miles that's where I would go. If you're just looking for a place to hangout then the other location would be fine.

I'm not familiar with Star Lake, but I can think of 5-6 bar and grills that you would be able to ride to in even the marginalist of snows. The Gateway, Hideaway, Donners Bay, Camp One, Midway, Birches, Dear Lodge, and I heard a place called the Sunken Horse applied for a Liquor license so you will have opportunities on the Flowage as well.

I would go with the Mercer area, bud has a cabin right on the flowage we have been goin there for ten yrs. Great area, make sure to stop in @ The Birches great pizza! Even if the snow is low there is always good ice for fishin'.
Make sure leader has a gps on the flowage, spent a night or two out there in heavy fog with no land or markers in sight. Once on a sled the other was in the truck. Casino not to far away & then there's always Hurley for crack hoar strippers. The Birches are in park falls.

Star Lake very nice area with well groomed trails lots of great places to eat near by like Bink Bonnies & all that Eagle River, Lando & St Germain offers. UP not far by trail from SL & more Ricky Racers in Mercer area although on weekends both surrounding trail areas are very popular. Mercer more of a hardcore rider area lots of traffic in town in Mercer not much to do except Hurley. I would pick Star Lake for true WI Northwoods trail experience with a bit of class & surely would not offend any customers so much to more to do based from SL.

Both are excellent locations, you wont go wrong with either one. Star lake location may take alittle more time to get to due to the weather conditions, but Mercer is the bottle neck for riders to north farther. I say flip a coin.
