Hello, quick question for you all.

I am trying not to spend a lot of money on rebuilding a clutch for a cheap indy 500 I have that I bought several yrs back and now just let friends ride or use as a emergency backup.

So my question is: It needs the clutch rebuilt. Stock weights are 49.5gram 10M5 weights. Would it be better to put 51.5 gram weights in or 47.5 gram weights in? I dont want to spend the $55 bucks on new weights if the others will work and I can get them for $20. I know the lighter ones will make the rpms go up, and the heavier one will lower the top rpm.... so which is the better route??? Its going on a stock set-up 1990 indy 500 with a L/C motor. I has a 133 track. Motor runs very good has 63xx miles and 135lbs comp. in both cyl.

Any thoughts would be greatly appr.

Thanks

You need to change your spring to match weight. If its an old spring, its probably time for a new one anyway. I replace my springs every 1500 miles.

heavier weights make the clutch engage later. That is why when you buy a clutch kit, you get heavier weights. That way, you take off a lot faster. But like salmonbum said, if you put in heaver weights, your gonna need a stiffer spring.

Try the lighter weights, with the older weaker spring you
may get lucky and hit your running rpm.
you got em try em.

Indy, the heavier the weight the sooner you will engage, what they do is give you a stiffer spring to up the engagement.

OK, so I am not the greatest at this clutch thing...all I am looking to do is get the clutch usable again. I got a spider kit.... now I need some weights. Stock says they should be 49.5g 10 M5 with a Silver spring. The clutch has a gold spring in it now not sure of the weights. I have a clymers manual and have been looking at all the different types of clutch set-ups.

I was hoping to find a decent clutch setup for normal riding for the average user, for cheap. With all the looking around I have done I might as well just buy stock and spend the money....only like another 10-15bucks anyways.

But does anybody know....Are the Polaris Gold & Silver springs the same....they are both rated 100/275?
