Has Vilas numbered any of their intersections yet? I find this to be a huge help and think all counties should do it.

Yes everything is numbered for 1st responders so they know exactly how to get to you if needed. Completed for at least 1 year.

Indy: Always stay north by shore at narrows between North & South Twin lake by power line crossing south side not too deep but very very thin no matter how cold it gets. Already 1 sled went thru this year. I saw a sled out on that spot stopped way off the marked trail & tried to wave him in but ignored me shot off east. I'm sure he had no idea he was on ultra thin ice. Plenty of exits on the lake for bar, grills, trails & gas just need to know where they are. You would like Hoilday Lodge for grub & pop on south side of North Twin then could take Hoilday Lodge land trail to 17 to wherever.

I got messed up around Phelps either last year or year before last, and ended up going over the lake by mistake. Trail is weird around those roads it follows. Easy to mess the trail signs on the road, and then your on the lake. (Monheim??) I don't stop to read maps every ten minutes like I used to, so if trails aren't properly marked, sometimes things happen.

I think the reason some folks have a problem in the Phelps area is because the lakes are part of the trail system to some degree. I was there several times last week and went on and off the lake several times by just following the intersecting trail system. There are trail signs out on the lake where the barrels meet. Stopped at the Holiday 2 days for lunch, the pizzas are good as well as the burgers. Both days I started up in Land O and went down from the northeast and then once from the northwest. Trail 6 was great in both directions.

I prefer the lake cuts out a lot of in & out of roads on land trail. I only take land trail until they open the lake. You need to come to 3 way junction up the hill going south from 6E lando take right for land trail that connects to 17S. I always go into town by Post Office trail cross lake to the gas station where you cross Route 17 & pick up trail 17 again. I go south from there then take unplowed FRs home cut back north & east a bit. Indy: Crossing lake at night is a problem if not sure where you are going as can pick up Holiday Lodge trail or go west on thru trail. Holiday Lodge is on south side deadends on lake at HL & thru trail on north side of lake & has exits. Holiday Lodge also has land spur trail to 17 so plenty of access just need to know here to look. All biz or most biz is on the lake very little in town.

Whitedust is correct, at night if your not familiar, you could get lost. Easy land marks, south twin is the smaller or the two,
the large towers while riding North stay on the left, follow the barrells. the water barley gets iced over between South & North twin. Last year the barrells headed due north to Twin Heaven Resort(look for the old style sign & lights ) it then would cross the lake on a diagonal route to the "C" Center ( Phelps Conveinence center) you could go up for gas and trails, or continue straight to the North end of North Twin lake by downtown Phelps. Always stay with the barrells. And watch your speed at night. The DNR is always present.
