I would think the upright ridding posision of the revs would be far less strenuous on the hips than any other sled out there.

Your probably just sore because your using a different muscle group. I am far less fatigue
riding 150 miles on my Rev compared to my Yamaha or other old school seating positions. I also used to use a kidney belt/ back brace all the time, now nothing. 100 miles doesn't even bother me now. Try riding the XP chassis then go back the regular Rev and you will think how did I do this.

Yep it is called getting in riding shape. Takes me about 500 miles to wake the bod up for 300 mile days. I'm good now for an old timer ...opened on the 16th with a 100 miler. I have to remind myself to get off every 11/2 hours just to change up position. Too use to just keep riding without breaks but when alone not any urgent reason to stop.

Hey ezra what you wearing? I have 2 knee braces, core protector with spine protection then wrap that with a back thing & 2 thumb things for both hands. Loosen up for 1/2 hour before I gear up & pop 1 Lortab just before helmet goes on. I'm good for about 3-4 hours of hard riding then pop another Lortab good for another 3-4 hours & come in with a reserve while 30 year olds are dragging their butts. Stopping is not good for me start to tighten up. I can't get enough of this sport make me feel young again.

Whitedust, stopping every hour 1-1/2 hours is a great way to stretch out the hips, but the real reason as we get older, is to stop and pee.

bsc, I've got a bum hip from an accident in '88 and in the last year have "upgraded" from a ZX chasis to the XP. I never really had a problem with the ZX (or previous chasis's) other than feeling like my knees were in my face! But now on the XP, I can feel some stress in my hip. The only thing I can see is that maybe the seat in narrower on the XP which leaves my hip hanging off the side more. I'm still trying to dial in my suspension etc so I know I've been moving around alot. Also, on this machine I tend to find myself wanting to put my feet back which puts weight/stress on my feet, legs, hip. Where on the ZX chasis it's mostly on the butt as I used to keep my feet directly in the footwell and lifted up on the handlebars when I had too. I'm not an overly agressive rider but can push it when I want too.

I agree with the previous feedback on getting into rider shape but I think there is something with the ergonomics too. It's probably the best fit for a healthy individual but could differ when previous health issues are factored in. JMO

Holy Cow Whitedust! Sign me up for your program )
Love it! I don't know if I could do the knee brace thing,....
but you're right,... The older and stiffer we get, we just gotta
find what gets us through, to keep on riding!
If I rode an old-style set up these days,... You would have to
get a crane to get me off the sled! LOL!
Still sore from the New Years weekend, but loving it!
Saw a couple in their Late 70's over the weekend,...
Thought to myself. Hope that's ME down the road!

Think * Snow!

I'm with Ezra! Full body cast!

I did not say I was sore or in poor riding shape. I have been riding an 03 Rev since they came out and also have a 08 renegade. They handle great. My question is has anyone developed hips problems since riding one of these sleds. Your knee is closer to your chest on the earlier Rev. I developed Avascular Necrosis (loss of blood flow in the bone) in my hips and had to have both them replaced. Just wondering if being in this position for along time can cause loss of blood flow to the bone. I had the left replaced in 04 and the right in 06. I have no explanation as to how I got this. So I am looking for answers. I was 43 at the time.

The good news is I never stopped riding and still ride today, but I am just curious as to why this happened to me. Doctors have no clue as I don't fall into any of the normal categories of what causes this.

I hope thes pics don't gross you out.

Yep that is pretty darn gross! XP, Apex Twinspar, IQ all put you in a different position than old rev. Many on JD said old rev hurt their knees & hurt mine & I never bought old rev due to knee stress. Apex is the least forward of the bunch but close in feel to me to the XP. If you think old rev is hurting your hips which YOU would know due to the pain try another sled.

bschams- I doubt that the riding position was the cause of your avascular necrosis(AVN). You would probably have to ride 6-8 hrs a day 7 days a week for years in order for the position to be considered a cause of AVN. Trauma is the most common cause of AVN however other factors can play a role as well such as corticosteriods, bisphosphinates(mostly intravenously), cancer treatment as well as other less common things. I am assuming that all of these have already been investigated by your doctors as they say you do not fall into the typical category. AVN is a progressive disease and the original trauma does not necessary have to be severe so it is possible you bumped yourself years ago and it just slowly progressed over time. Lastly, you may have been one of the "lucky" ones that developed something without experiancing one of the known causes. I will say that the riding position probably does make your symptoms worse but is probably not the cause.

Mystery Bad Hips

bsshams, I think you had the luck of the draw the same as I did. I had both hips replaced with the Birmingham hip. One last May and the first in August of 2008. I rode a lot as a kid on the old sit downs (Rupp Sprint). I played hockey since the age of nine and rode a bike like a maniac growiing up. I am 47 now and the surgeon cannot really say why both hips blew so early other than wear and tear (and genetics). Mine were so bad that I could not even sit on a REV chassis so I have two 2003 Grand Touring 500S Skidoo's, Needed the extra long seat so that I could even sit on these. I would ride and then it would take me five minutes to be able to stand up off the machine. Just rode over the holiday with my new hips and was pain free. Unbelievable feeling. Now I darn near sit on the gas tank with my legs folded under me. Time for a new machine. I gues what I am saying is that you probably will never know what really caused your hips to go bad. They just did but I bet you feel better now with the new ones!

Glad to hear that I am not the only one still riding with new hips. I hope yours work well for you. Hard to believe the difference they make. Doctors tell you to wait as long as you can before getting them replaced. Life is too short to wait once you know they are shot for the relief new ones give you.
I am not familiar with the brand you have. Mine are Stryker, with ceramic bearing surfaces.

hip questions

Young children often first sit on the floor with their feet out to the sides, and one of the first things we teach in early childhood or kindergarten is how to sit kindergarten style, with feet crossed in front of them. I was told this is because it is very hard on kids' hips to sit with feet out, even tho they are very flexible at this age. I had never thought of this in regards to the rev machines, but this is the exact position you hold when you are on a rev. I know it feels very uncomfortable for me to sit on a rev. I am not a medical person, but I would think if it is not a good position for 3 to 6 year olds, it probably isn't a good one for adults. Again, probably not the cause of your problems, but may have been a factor??? My long legged brother with knee problems can't ride rev either.

hip replacement

When the time comes, you will know they need to be replaced.I've had both replaced, one in 05 and the other in 08.I have no problem with them at all.The cause of mine was simply years of abuse.
Life is to short.Enjoy every day you can.
