Houghton and Keweenaw counties backcountry

I have read of people like John boondocking in Houghton and Keweenaw counties but I am not finding any federal or state forest lands where there would be public land maps available. Is this because it is mostly private land like farms or smaller parcel county lands not well mapped? Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks!

It is mostly cfr land owned by timber companies... proceed with caution

LOL. Thanks, Indy. I used to work for a "large midwest paper company" that owned hundreds of thousands of acres and they actually used to make maps available to the public (with requisite disclaimers of course). Those days are gone. Guessing much of the land up there is now Nature Conservancy, maybe Plum Creek (now Weyerhauser) and the like.
