How far over the WI border

before they start checking for trail permits?
We only have MI permits and possibly want to head into Conover. I've seen DNR in MI around Watermeet a few times but never in WI.

If you're on the trails in Wisconsin, I would get a trail pass regardless of how much you're on them. It only takes one time, and if there's a group of you, the DNR is gonna hit the jackpot. Not worth the risk in my mind.

I have seen the Vilas Sheriffs sled patrol right at Cty B where the grade crosses into Wi and also at the trail head by the Land O airport. Have also seen DNR sitting on Little Portage Lake Rd just a few miles outside of LOL where the trail runs the road for awhile.

It's all about separating us from our money.... It's up to you on how much.... I always buy a Michigan pass from the MSA in the fall weather I plan a trip or not, so crossing the border is not an issue or having to hunt one down. For Wisconsin I recommend to everybody I know about registering your sled as an out of state non-resident. It only takes a few minutes, only cost $15 per year and they send you the renewal every other spring so you don't forget. No worries and no probable cause. Happy trails.

Don't worry about it. When pulled over, tell the LEA that your buddies on John Dee said it was OK, since you were only going to go over the border a little bit

Name?

Maybe we should make sure we don't groom the days you come to visit, so you might understand where the money goes.

I'm renting for a few days and thought about getting one since I do like the WI trails better but the snow isn't there. The soup at Bauers is calling me though. Plus I wanted to show a freind who has never been there water skipping.
never ran into them in WI in my 17 years going up there but I also havent been around that area in a few years.

just checked the wisconsin dnr site and it says to operate a snomo on public trail or corridor you need to display a valid wi registration. or you need to display a valid non-resident trail pass
and a valid non-resident registration. looks like you can't avoid the trail pass even if you have your sled registered in wi as a non-resident sled...too bad. it sounded like a good idea

Classicchick, Wisconsin law states that a non resident must purchase a trail pass and display it along with their valid home state registration to use the trails. If you register the sled in Wisconsin, you are treated like a resident, no separate pass is required unlike Michigan where you need a trail pass and a valid registration no mater where you live. Your home state may have different laws that require you to have dual registration or purchase a trail pass to operate inside their border.

If you non-volunteers only knew how many hours the volunteering-minority puts into developing and maintaining the trail system each year, this thread would have never started. Paying for reg. and/or a trail pass is the least you can do!!!! All of us club members that VOLUNTEER our time for the rest of you happily pay for out-of-state passes to ride elsewhere and so should you.

I can see not wanting to pay for a trail sticker for a few of miles ( I have no idea how far it is to Conover from Mi). I would just plan the ride different and stay out of WI. If you really want to go into WI then buy the sticker (sounds cheep) or risk a fine (probably not so cheep). Chances are you will not get stopped but if I were DNR that sounds like a prime spot to patrol. Good Luck.

Just buy the sticker. Clubs get between 60-70% of costs associated with maintaining trails. State and county trails only. Club spurs don't even qualify for re-imbursment. That does not compensate anybody for time spent talking to landowners, building bridges, brushing, staking, taking out the signs, and riding in the groomer. If you get enough money back to pay for part of the gas bill and groomer repair.....you are doing good. You put nothing away to buy a groomer to replace the dying one. It's all on the club to raise money to keep the trail open.

Just go as far as you want into Wisconsin. Its the chance you take and it will make the permit cheap when you get caught. I am using a different sled for one day and bought the Michigan permit. The $45 is not worth worrying about if the Dnr is sitting there. Its just breaking the law so do not worry about it. You know the consequence. It should be a nice weekend with lots of people and more Dnr out enjoying writing tickets to the law breakers. Enjoy your $200 bowl of soup.

$35 a piece is a little pricey for amount of riding we want to do and I don't think the rental place want us to put a WI sticker on their sled. I wonder if the rental place right on the border in Land O' has both MI and WI stcikers. THat has to be a hefty cost.
The water isn't fully open anyways from what I read. We'll see what happens.
Maybe next year we'll get hit with more snow and I'll have no problem buying both MI and WI. We've always stayed in Land O' in the past and 70-80 percent of the time rode in WI.

With the extra I pay through additional donations for the areas I ride, consider a few volunteers paid for then FOR him!

Bigdaddy says they checked stickers in Marinesco last weekend. All in the group were legit - when he asked the guys where they were going (Presque Isle) he saw they had their WI as well and told them good, it was best to not have any problems.

Me personally? I'd buy the pass just to not have the hassle AND so a VOLUNTEER out of Baraboo WI has some piece of mind!
