Hurley, MI Riding

Since it NEVER snows in Central MN, my son and I are thinking about trailering to Ironwood, MI and unloading there to ride.

What are the trails like leaving Ironwood?
Are there good places to park and unload?
What can we expect?

I know it is not the best part of MI but we do not want to drive a really long ways. Can anybody help out with these questions?

Thanks!

I do not know what type of riding you like to do but it can be some of the best trail riding. There are a lot of hotels to stay at so that will not be a problem. Ironwood has the 1 trail in 1 trail out but a few miles out you will have choices. If you like to trail ride you can head into Wisconsin also. From what it sounds like you will have good trails. I personaly like to ride Michigan and Vilas and Iron County Wisconsin,

Marinesco

Head east to Marinesco and stop at Bam Bams and then head south to Presque Isle and then on North on 11N and back to Ironwood. I suppose a stop at Gogebic is in order before heading south to Marinesco. On the next day head 11N to lake of the clouds and back down to the Gogebic area and then west back to Ironwood.

Ride the 11N to Lake of the Clouds. You will see quite the variety of riding. Part of the trail is winding woods and then you see the Superhighway, South Boundry. Very nice ride from Ironwood. Just remember to get gas in Wakefield and then hit the Konteka for gas in White Pine. Remember those two gas stops and you will be golden.

Heading South to Marinesco is another fun ride. Bam Bams has some 87 octane gas if you need it as well. That ride is also good for some variety. Part of that is RR grade and part is winding through the woods. The grade is interesting with the pine trees right next to the trail. It is almost like riding a tunnel.

Have fun, PM me if you have any questions. We practically do all of our riding out of that region.

Question

Thanks for the replies. How far is it if this were the route we took?

11 north to 152. 152 to S Boundry Route to 102 to 8/1 to 8 and back to Wakefield. My son is 12. Is this a route that will be packed with traffic?

Not sure if gas will be an issue. My son is riding a '07 Phazer and I'm on a Nytro. I was on a trail map site and it seemed there weren't a ton of gas locations.

Thanks for the help.

Just fill up in Wakefield then you can make it to Bergland where you can get gas. Areyou going to ride in Wisconsin at all? Trail 2 is usually fun also, it just depends what you like to do. You do not see a ton of people at this time of year so I do nto think it will be too packed. Alot of it is a road so you have plenty of room. Trail 11 never really saw alot of people on it.

Hey MNUSER,

With the route you suggested I am guessing that is about 75 or 80 miles at the most...probably less and I bet some other folks can chime in. Easily do-able with a 12 year old that is somewhat experienced. I don't think it will be packed with traffic at all.

Also, once you leave Wakefield and head up 11N there are NO places to stop (gas, food, etc...) until you hit 8/1. Stop at the Hoop N Holler on Lake Gogebic (you will see signs) to warm up, eat, gas, etc... Depending on time on how fast you get to the Hoop you can either take 8 back to Wakefield or you can head down 1S (west side of the lake) to 2W. 2 will take you back to Wakefield as well.

No worries on gas if you fill up in Wakefield/Ironwood before leaving.
Hope that helps, my buddies and I ride that area all the time and will be up der in less than a month!

Are you planning on just one day of riding? That would be a pretty nice ride. It would be doable with the gas too.

You will see a lot of traffic around Ironwood but almost none once you hit 11N. If you are staying overnight somewhere, you could try to make it a day trip to Silver City and Lake of the Clouds. There is an Amercan Inn there or the Konteka in White Pine. I think he would like the trip up to the top. It runs along the lake and is a pretty easy ride. There are a few stops along the way to take in the view.

Keep in mind you'll need a MI sticker and If you go into WI you'll need another sticker, I would stay in MI and ride there. I don't know how long your going to be there, but you can ride MI for several days without touching the same trail

O come on stay in good old down town Hurley at the motel on main street, so you get the full experience. It sounds like it might be the first trip for the young-in, mine as well break him in the right way and visit the local establishments! :) :)

I am honestley kidding go with fatdaddys suggestion.

Have fun!

never forget bout 10 years ago my Pops and I were just checking out of holiday inn in hurley, the hotel girl asked us if we enjoyed the night life on main street? we said what are you talking about? She said oh about the 13 clubs over there! My dad punches me, and said we spent 5 days here and didn't find one... we stared laughing. Still never gone in one......

DON'T stay in Hurley, much too much traffic and town riding, drive 1/2 hr or so more east and stay where the trail is outside your door. Go to at least Wakefield. Enjoy!

If u stay at Days INN, Eagle Bluff Condos, u are right next to the trail, very little traffic...I've stayed at Days Inn since back in the late 90's...

Drive at least to Beglund, or White Pine to be more centralized in the trail system. More options of where to go each day.

Geographic bulletin: Hurley is in Wisconsin, right across the border from Ironwood, Michigan!

Thanks for the heads up. It was a typo......I figured with your superior geographical knowledge you would put that together so I did not fix it.

Thanks Folks

Thanks for the responses. It looks like Bergland is about 5.5 hours from here. I may have to look at going for a couple days.

Does a person have to worry about theft of your snowmobiles at night? What do you guys do to prevent this? I have an open trailer so "hiding" them is not an option. I do carry insurance so I'm covered there. Would be a bummer to wake up and see them gone.

Thanks again!

I have been going to UP for years and the thing I would say is bring a heavy cable lock and lock skis together. Pull a plug wire. But a thief is a thief and locks keep honest people away. I've never had trouble, but I tend to go more east to stay.
