Hurley to Ashland, WI?

Is there a decent trail/route to get from Hurley to Ashland? I was thinking that maybe trail 2 from Saxon/the Frontier Bar headed that direction, but it doesn't show up on any maps I can find. Looks like maybe you have to go south a ways to get over there. Just looking for a new route/loop for a day next weekend.

Thanks!

Nope, your out of luck. Been this way for over 40 years. No trail available through the Indian Reservation.

That trail through the Bad River Reservation has been closed for years...The last time I rode through there was probably in the mid 1980"s...The tribe BURNED all the bridges along the trail and that was that...Yes, you have to loop down to the south and around the Res property...I remember when John Innes (Frontier Bar) was still alive and attempting to revive the trail by selling deeds for 5 linear ft of trail for $5.00 ea...LOOOOOOL...Obviously it never succeeded...Except for filling someones pockets...I still have the paper deed he gave me showing ownership of 10 linear ft of trail...

Thanks guys, that is what I was thinking, that the reservation was a no snowmobile zone. I swear one year not too many years (~10-15) back we ended up at the Casino out in the reservation, maybe we weren't supposed to be there but somehow we followed trails and made it there.

I think there is/used to be a trail that ends at the casino from Ironwood.
Yes, I remember seeing snowmobiles and ATVs coming out of the trail into the casino/gas station parking lot. I assumed it was a formal/sanctioned trail, but I don't know for sure.

Interesting to hear… don’t ride that area much and never realized how much of big snow country is inaccessible due to bad river until I looked at a map a week ago… what a shame, all that snow…

You have to go pretty far south and that going to be a full day over and back to Ashland. The Hurley to Iron Belt to Upson, then up to near Saxon, left and follow US2 on to where it heads over to Lake Superior is a nice ride, nice views up by Superior, not sure if the resturants will be open up there or not, there is a bar in Saxon that serves good food. Trails should be awesome up that way. If you have a Michigan sticker you can come back the northern route to Ironwood.

The last stretch from 2 up to Saxon harbor is usually brutal. I don't think the groomers even bother with it.

I've done it several times, but as pointed out, no straight shot from Hurley. You can get there by taking trail 11 to Ashland Cty, you pick it up just south of Island Lake (Bear Chasers, Willy's Still). You head from Island Lake to Mellen, then north on I think its trail 13 (Ashland Cty trail) into Ashland.

If you're not familiar with the area, Island Lake is a popular Hurley area stop, about 15mi south of Hurley.
