Hyfax questions

I have read that to help extend the life of your hyfaxes you could drill little holes along your entire hyfax to help snow accumulate in them holes and keep the clips cooler and prevent the plastic hyfax from melting... Is there any truth in this or would it weaken the hyfax?

Been doing it for years. Any snow you can save in the little holes gets used when you have to go across snowless ice or grass or dirt or whatever. Spring riding. Racers used to do it all the time. Friction reducer. The only thing bad about it is that little stones can get caught in the holes and wreck your clips. I don't think it weakens the hyfax much if at all. I drill 3/16 holes - about 400 per slide on a 121 rail. Don't drill all the way through - that would certainly weaken the hyfax. Set up your drill press for about 5/16 and go nuts. Write words, Tic Tac Toe - whatever.

Thanks GRUB, but Ya i do kinda think scrathers would be the better route to take but while i had my old hyfaxs off and the new one ready to go on i thought i could do the drill hole thing. but these new phazer fx sleds rip thru the hyfax quick i only got 1600 and 1300 miles on both sleds and theres one spot inparticular thats worn right out. I did see theres a hyfax wheel saver kit to prevent this but i dont have lots of cash to dump into a sled right now and to replace my hyfax isnt to bad they slide right out thru the window in the track just gotta loosen the track tension a little bit.

I always do the, ride for a mile or so, stop, pack snow around them for a couple min. then do it a couple more times. Seems to make them last a little longer. Who knows?!

You really take the time to drill 800 holes?
Can this really even make them last longer?
I find it hard to believe.

Drilling 800 holes. So your time is worth nothing I see. 1 pr. of Hyfax at snow show was $15. drill 800 holes to get how much extended life? $3 to $5 worth? more? less? does it matter. 20 minutes I can change 2 slides on the side of a trail for $15 in Materials. It would take a while to drill 800 holes. Just ride in the snow works for me to get extended life on hyfax.

mmm drill'n 800 holes huh??? .... Well been ride'n for 30 years or so never done that... Seems that we replace the Hyfax after 2 years of riding. ( about 2400 miles and as mentioned before a pair of hyfax are about $15 ) We take out the rack, repack all the bearings, check all rails and supports for any stress fractures, replace Hyfax. Really...we take the rack out EVERY year for inpection and do what is nessary. This is the preventive maintence that you do to try and NOT have break downs out on the trail. About a 4 beer night with you buddies !!!
