If you mean the little black flies, then typically the end of May through June, but the way this spring is going, I would not be surprised to see them any day now.

Firecatguy, there is also the Hugarian Waterfalls in Tamarack City. It is a bit of a walk in, or up, depending on where you park. The easiest way is to go up (Sixth St. off of M-26) stay left to the hill (Old Golf Course Rd.) drive up approx 1/4 mile to the old snowmobile trail which is gated, park & walk in on flat ground. Keep in mind, the watershed right now is not what it normally is due to lack of snow cover & lack of rain, but there is still some nice scenery. When you first walk in stay to your right & head toward the dam. There is a path to walk up around that & see the first waterfall, then you can make your way down to the other falls from there. Enjoy.-Mezz

Antiques?

From Main Street Calumet, here are a few antique stores in Calumet.

And how about "antique" buildings? Can't beat the Calumet Theater. From the outside, it appears to be a thoroughly unremarkable yellowish-brown brick building, on a Jacobsville sandstone foundation, like so many other mining era buildings in the Copper Country, attached to, but a separate unit of the Calumet Municipal Building.

But step inside and you're transported back over a century ago to the opulent Red Jacket Opera House, one of the first municipal theaters in the country. Truly a well hidden architectural gem! Not unlike visiting Ford's Theater in Washington, DC, where President Lincoln was shot, but dating from over 60 years earlier, and seating 1200 vs. Ford's at 2400.

Sadly their own somewhat disorganized web site hardly does the building justice, with only a meager few, poorly presented photographs of the interior of the building.

Their web site does speak of tours, during the summer season (which they cleverly neglect to define!). At other times, tours are still available but only during box office hours: Wednesday through Friday 12pm - 5 pm.

Take MI 26 from Phoenix to Copper Harbour. It pretty much follows the lake shore and passes thru the towns of Eagle Harbour and Eagle River.
Another neat laker shore route is from Lac La Belle to Gay.

Wondering how this trip faired out. We have convinced the ladies to come up and see the area too. It is kinda funny, we have been up there on sleds about six times a year and never by car. We are going to need to look at a map just to get into Copper Harbor.

Does anyone know the guy in Copper Harbor that has the gas station during winter? We were thinking about trying to get to the lighthouse just off Highrock Point. We have stared at the thing long enough from the mainland. It is time to get out there and see the place. Just wondering who might have a boat available?
