Ice Caves

Can anyone give me accurate info on the Ice Caves near Bayfield? I know it's huge right now, but can we drive our sleds along the shoreline to them or are there trails going directly to them? How long of a hike is it to them if we must? Is it possible to get rooms nearby? Thanks in advance to all the helpful J.D.er's.

No, Snowmobiling and ATV use is not permitted within ¼ mile of the mainland from Saxine Creek to Sand Point.

NO Sleds.

Plan on walking a total of 4-5 miles. It's an easy walk if you are in ok shape. No need for snowshoes or anything.
I've been to the caves 5-6 times this year, and I always bring a thermos of hot chocolate with and enjoy the scenery.

Once you've seen the ice caves from the bottom, you need to make another very small hike to the top of the caves, and it will give you a different perspective of them.

Two weeks ago, cars were lined up for 7 miles on hwy 13.

You can take sleds but as stated 1/4 mile or 1000 feet from shore. still a much shorter walk than parking in the parking lot. Getting access to the lake on snowmobile you may find more difficult. FWIW there were about 4 groups fishing off of Myers beach about 3 miles out off of eagle island. No one could have stopped them from driving over and walking to the caves. That's a FACT JACK

A guy from work was there this past weekend, tons of people, like in the thousands. He seen license plates from Maine, Texas!
He said biggest problem was finding a place to stay. They're definitely worth going too see he said.

I was there last week, two sledders on Yami's rode their sleds all the way to the beginning of the caves BUT parked several hundred feet away from the shore/caves then walked into them. Definitely shorter trip. From Meyer's beach it's only 1.1 miles until the start of the caves. and a mile or so back. I saw people in the 70's making the trip. Over 4000 visitors a weekend i guess says the local paper. I pulled in and drove right to the Meyer's beach parking lot, waited 5 minutes until somebody pulled out. Rooms are booked everywhere.

Glad they are getting some good business. Maybe too much, the lady at Halvorson fisheries was kinda annoyed for some reason. We stopped in and bought fish and crackers. The smoked trout was awesome! Not kidding we stopped in Ashland and got some smoked trout too and it didn't even compare. You go right by the place when you head to Meyer's beach.
