Ice damage on Lake Gogebic

I don't have a subscription to the "Daily Globe" so I cannot read the full text but apparently when the ice broke up over the weekend there have been some big chunks wreaking havoc on docks. This picture is from the Gogebic Lodge. Anyone have any more info on other damage?

I live on a lake and we pull our boat lifts and docks for this very reason. Its work but well worth it.

Why would anyone leave their dock in or put it in before the ice is out? Everyone knows you won't win against the ice. Heck, it moved my shoreline around a lot this year. What were they thinking?

Most of the dock on Gogebic are lift docks, they cantilever out of the water during the winter. I am not sure what happened down at the Lodge, they may leave their docks in since they have a bay?

Our dock and shore stations got destroyed two years ago. The ice piled 20 feet high in front of our house and crunched the dock, then ice receded and took everything with it. What was left was 100 yds out in the lake. The concrete foundation was cracked in two. We have cantilever dock like most people on LG.This year it missed us but a couple of boat houses south of us got destroyed.

I'm not familiar with a lift or cantilever docks. Every dock I've seen rolls on 2 "wagon wheels" and a Shore Station type hoist. And on our large N Lower lake have never seen any left in for the winter. Why would most docks on LG be of this type ?

funny thing docks.
diff parts of town or country diff style dock.
3/4 of the docks in my parts are steel frame that u float out 16 ft at a time on a 55gal drum .set wood dock on top then drive steel pipe in to the lake. kick the drum out and keep going.http://www.niccumdocks.com/CedarDocks.aspx
at my cabin 80% are roll in FLOW same as the trailer corp.

There's a concrete foundation on shore that the dock hinges to. On top of the concrete foundation u have a steel tower that has a winch cable attached to it. In the fall u remove the decking from the dock, run the cable to the end of the dock and hoist the whole dock out of the water. Shore stations are bolted directly to the dock and lift out of the with this process . It works like a draw bridge on a castle.

as others have said, lakes seem to have similar styles, once the neighbor does this then I have to do it to keep up. I think the cantaleever style looks funny but cool, it's probably very easy to take out in the fall but does have drawbacks, like if the ice was real aggressive, it could damage the base or hinge point. Either way if you don't take your dock "out" it's a matter of time, our lake has a good mix of pipe docks and roll ins, but 80% are alum. No cantaleever.

It's just plain dumb not to pull them out! Our neighbor on Chassell Bay left his in last two years got lucky with wind. This year he's out $15,000 for a new one. Hate to say I told him so but what did he think was going to happen with 30+ inches of ice on the lake.
