Personally, I buy the ice line. Some of my friends use the regular line and it just doesn't work well in the cold. It doesn't stay limp and curls up. I use the black 20 or 30# test with a hand braided wire leader - 18 inches with a sinker at the top. I don't like the commercial ones as I think it spooks the fish. I replace the line on mine every other year and I fish just about every other weekend depending on snowmobiling. Another trick is to put a button on the line to mark your depth.

I agree with maddog on the mainline, but I've been using 17-20# florocarbon for the leader. Floro is super strong and abrasion resistant. #8 to #10 treble and your set to go. I tie all my crawler harnesses with 15# floro and i've yet to lose a walleye. And i've caught some giants on Green Bay. Not to mention a bonus muskie every now and then. One thing to remember when fishing floro leaders, you can't horse them, because if they do put a nick in it with their gill plates (northern pike) they will break you off. I never lost one on a floro leader but i'm also catching mostly 25-36" northerns. (knocking on computer desk right now)
I used to ice fish a bayou just south of New London. Lots of big pike in there. We would have our tip ups set up 5 to 10' off the banks in a couple of feet of water and pound the northerns. All nice and chunky fish. Nice crappies in the deep holes also. Good luck, hopefully my shack will be going out on Noquebay this weekend.
