Ice Scrathers - do they work?

Help, I am going ice fishing in Canada next week and found out there is not a single snowflake on the ice. If I mount ice scratchers on my sled do you think they will push enough ice into the track keep my sled cool and hy-fax from melting?

Personaly I think they will help. Some people don't seem to like them but I do. Expecially if you use reverse. Last year the wifes Blizzard got warm in low snow conditions. This year (never had anything but low snow conditions) light never came on once. Only problem I have had is I mounted them with so much down pressure that I can never seem to keep them hookin in the up position. I like the fact of the replacable tips. $20 and you got a new set.

Yes! They work fantastic! Definite must have. I've run my 1.5" track on glare ice with zero issues. No overheating, automatic braking (hyfax sticking) or that lovely burning plastic smell. Next season a set's going on the ZR for "just incase".

Just wait until you're on the ice to deploy them. They do a great job of throwing dirt and rocks into the skid too.

Very easy to deploy and un-deploy. Mine are the Holtz, SnoBunji, or StaCool style (coat hangers), not the SlideKicks (aircraft cable) Cheers.

Great! Thanks snowfish - I will use them. I was getting a little worried, I love ice fishing and still think sleds are better then wheelers - especially for crossing pressure ridges. With a picked track and ice scratchers I should be set up to go anywhere!! Even if there is no snow.

Tough to call. Most are designed to work in frozen snow/ice and not frozen water/ice (You know what I'm talking about). Glare ice may not break up and fly around enough to give you cooling and lubrcation. Your studs will probably do better at cooling a lubrication. Good luck either way

you could drill a hole in the back of your ski, and put a bolt thru it. i'm thinking about doing it but haven't yet.

How about a slow antifreeze drip on the rails? Like "back in the day" ice drags? That was short lived. They kind of put the kibosh, on that, with the environmental stuff and all. Didn't cool the engine but dang it sure made things slippery! Ok, dating my self now………….

But back to the itchy & scatchy show.........................
From real world experience the "coat hanger" scratchers, when riding Zamboni smooth ice, make the skid look like snowcones. The studs will definitely enhance the cooling properties but won't lube the slides.

Weekend before last, I saw a sled with the redneck bolt through the ski trick. The wake looked like a jet ski just barely up on plane. The inner spray looked to be hitting the front of the track and getting run over. I'm sure some made it into the skid, but don't know how much. This method does not have enough down pressure to make snowcones on glare ice.

Stevo11, bring me along and I'll buy & install the scratchers for you! Yah! I only wish! Lakers I presume? Take lots of pics. Cheers

I've never used mine on glare ice, but they work wonders on super hardpack. I left the house here one morning, about a month ago I guess, morning temps were in the single digits and the trails were groomed the night before. They had set up nice and hard. For the first mile or so I kept my scratchers up, when the temp got to 160, I stopped, dropped them down, and within a mile to two miles, temp was back down to 130. They work great.

Yep, Lakers in thunder bay. Can't wait !! Need to spend less time messing with the sled and more time fishing.

Don't know if they are still there or not but someone (dcs...) had some for sale in the gear or parts section on here.

Indy saves them for his heat exchanger!!!!!!!!!

Sorry but that is just funny!!

On a serious not I have Slidekicks and love them! On hard pack I can cool my sled down one whole heating bar on the gauge! But on Glare ice I am not sure that they will work! I mean they will help for sure but you may still have some issues!

why do you think they call them ice scratchers? they work amazing, a friend of mine rides a rev with 170 hp that only runs the small heat exchanger that came on the rev snowcross sleds, the only reason he doesnt nuke that engine every time he goes over ice is that he has ice scratchers on there.

Go with slidekicks if your sled has reverse. The "coat hanger" type do not hold up when backing up.

Guess I misread the original post, I thought these were the ones you were talking about. I would go with slidekicks over ice scratchers. Slidekicks are the ones I am refering to in my first post.

Dang, too warm - had to scrap the Canada trip
So I can't tell you if the ice scratchers work - will let you know next year!

nothing to let us know. Been using them for a few years. slidekicks work very good. and the coat hanger ones wreck when in reverse.
