That really hits home as we got a silver lab just over a year ago. We had taken a break for a few years after losing our last yellow lab.
They sure are loyal companions no matter what the circumstances are.

The part about talking to him even though he doesn't understand is a good one! I was a drug dog handler in the USAF, these were highly trained dogs that were trained not only to detect narcotics but to track, scout and controlled attacks. I had a dog in Turkey, he was a mean sob, when I first was assigned to him, before I entered his kennel, I spent over three hours outside of it calmly reading a book to him out loud. I was finally able to safely enter his kennel and leash him up and start working with him.
