I was back to work in less than 5 days and back to "normal" within 3-4 weeks. The Dr. did not use stiches, just some internal webbing and that was it. I swelled up pretty bad down there and the black and blue went away in a couple of weeks. The pain was bad for about 3 days after that it was the tenderness and the stiffness that got me.

I had the old surgery, 6 weeks to recover. My buddy had the new one and only 1 week to recover.

Had this surgery twice, Pete, it depends on what type, if orthoscopic it is a short recovery of a week or two. However, mine they did opening me up, both times with the mesh, first one didnt take to well, they were done five years apart, took approx four weeks to return to work, light duty and spend two weeks on that. good luck

It can happen to anyone. I had the inguinal around 32 years old. Doc said it could happen sneezing. I did not even do anything to make it pop....just woke up one day, went to the park and started a light jog and just happen to notice that someone was whacking my boys with a hammer!!!!
quick recovery as far as pain (arthroscopic)...but dont lift anything like a sled for 4 to 8 weeks. (your boys will also be purple and blue) trail riding for you!! mine is holding up...10 years now. (mesh)

My dad had a double and had both sides meshed. He had an experience of total bend over pain when he woke up and 2 days there after. come to find out the Doc stapled one of his nerves! My mom stopped calling him a wuss after that. one Doc redid the staple he was good. 3 weeks total recovery for him.

I have had two, and have been putting off a third one that is not serious or dangerous for a few years now.
My first I was born with and didn't rip to become serious till 10th grade (1974) I lost my junior and senior years in highschool sports because of it. The second was during my first 4 years in the military blew out the same ring and had it repaired. Never been the same since, now it leaks but isn't blown out or too uncomfortable or painful, I will put this one off till the doc says it has to be done.
The danger has more to do with choking blood away from intestines etc. and getting gang green internally.
The best advice is if the doctor says it needs repair get it repaired. And follow his advice and exercise/rehab schedule, don't over do it like I did, ripping mesh and or stiches and or repairs and crap inside is not a good idea. The methods are way way better now than the last hernia repair I had. If they can do it with out a lot of intrusion cutting by just punching holes and fixing (I think this is called laporscoptic or something like that) I would go with the least intrusive if you can.
When you hit 50 you start regretting a lot of the damage you do to yourself over the years it catches up in a bad way. Good luck and get well soon.

Hernia's aren't just for the "older" crowd. I had to have a double inguinal hernia surgery when I was 25! Untill I had that happen to me I thought I was invincible, I am 6'-8" and 260lbs and I thought being as tall as I am I only had to worry about damaging my back when lifting things. Now, I ask for help when lifting instead of overdoing it. I had the laproscopic surgery and that went smoothly, but it took about 3-4weeks to get back to normal. Like previously mentioned by some others there is alot of bruising that goes on with that method. It hurt like heck to sneeze or cough for a while.
