Less clutter along the trails is what they are saying now, huh? LOL They had been saying it was to slow sledders down! I don't think they really know why they did it and I still think it's a crazy idea! There are bound to be more accidents as a result, IMO.

I read the comments and you have to wonder if they talked to sledders much about this or even took their thoughts in to consideration. I can't imagine there are even 10% of snowmobilers that agree with this craziness. Typical government at work! The one thing that would be much better with less, is government!

So the MI DNR is taking a less clutter position this month.lol Typical DNR left & right hand no idea what each other are doing or even saying & not including MSA on new signage.lol

According to the actual DNR posting of this change, they consulted "motorized vehicle users" who were invited to sit on a panel before making these changes.

Anyone want to admit to getting involved?

I bet if the DNR took down ALL signage they could save even more money....and gosh look how much less cluttered the countryside would be!

According to some cheesehead friends I ride with, Michigan trails are barely marked right now compared to cheeseland trails.

Merry Xmas moose & yes WI trails have excellent signage. You would think with all those WI Twistys that trails would not be marked to show all the twists but some signs look like snakes so WI paid big bucks for excellent signage.

So what you are saying is Wisconsin has lots of clutter in the woods? Won't the skiers object to all that advertisement in their woods?

Go ahead and make Merry...Whitey.....there will be plenty of time to get scraped by the market AFTER the holidays.

Between Friday and Saturday when I was riding here at home, there were 6 different spots where people blew the corners. Now, how can that be? All the corners were very well marked. Hmm, oh yea, because they were riding to fast.

When I spoke to the dnr person on the phone about this he told me that they wanted to make the trails the same. By this I mean some trails were marked well and some were not. Some had clutter on them or excessive signage.

In others words; clean them up.

I don't see any of the signs that were removed as a necessity anyway, that could cause potential harm.

I spent some time at the MSA booth in Novi as one of my fellow members went to great length to explain to me the signage changes. It all made sense (some in theory). Example: If you see a narrow bridge sign, people tend to hard brake (because we all know it is dug out on both sides) then pin it once over the bridge causing more of the dug out. Now the sign folks feel that if you are not made aware of the bridge then you will travel at a normal pace and not add to the dug out and major bump effect that can cause an accident. This makes sense to me. As far as the wiggle curve signs well those were generic and the curves never matched the signs anyways and Duh! on the curves they are everywhere. I am In favor of less signs, trails look like interstate highways with them. Trail numbers that match the maps are very nice and so are the maps at intersections. Out west and in Canada there is very little signage other than intersection maps and info to town, and caranage is not any greater that I can see.

EXACTLY. And no sign helped them here, what makes everyone think it will help everywhere else? I guess I'm in the 10%, though I'm not going riding in MI anytime soon, so perhaps my comments don't matter.

People that ride irresponsibly will do so with or without signs. You can't fix stupid or legislate it out of the equation. My prediction is, the segment of sledders (or rather, their behavior) this program is aimed at will be unaffected -- unless they kill themselves off. But for better or for worse, it's here, so we'll just have to wait and see. I hope I'm wrong.

Anyone who is riding based on the signs is going to have problems. You HAVE to ride based on what you can SEE with your eyes, sign or no sign. Bottom line, anything more is too fast.

Yeah, I like to squeeze the flipper with the best of them, but you aren't going to catch me looking for a sign to base my decision on when to slow down. That's just moronic.

I love it when people compare riding in Michigan with out West or in Canada. Night and day. How many people go out west to ride just trails? Canada has lots of trail riding, but the trails are typically much better and the traffic is so much less compared to the UP. I just can't see how you can compare them!

Easy. What does going out west to just ride trails have to do with anything? Actually, they have cliffs on many of their turns. trail riding is trail riding?? Sad to have to admit that Canada's trails are way better, but again trails are trails. Were are you going with this? What next, paint center lines?

Back in my "outlaw" riding days of "Ricky racing" I loved the signs to inform me to setup for a curve, etc. The signage did promote me to ride much faster. The signs gave me a sense of security in speeding. I must be getting older. I suppose that the FIB's are used to highway signage and they feel right to home with plenty of it. I think it ruins the landscape and takes away from the wilderness experience.
Note: not all the signs are gone, just many unneeded ones.
