I have never stayed in the Ironwood area and am looking for lodging suggestions. We plan on riding north & east out of Ironwood. Any suggestions would be appreciated....

If you're looking for direct trail access, the AmericInn on US 2 would probably be your best bet. The main trail runs east/west right out the back door. From there you can either head into Hurley and hit the Wisconsin trails or head further east into Michigan. A suggestion for a great ride...about a mile east of the hotel is Trail 160. It will take you north to Lake Superior, through Saxon Harbor, and you can make a loop back through Wisconsin and end up in Hurley (be sure to have a Wisconsin sticker if you hit Wisconsin-it's easy to cross the border without even knowing it if you're not familiar with the area). Some great overlooks along the way, and not usually very heavily travelled. The only problem this year has been the lack of snow when you get closer to the lake (Saxon area). I haven't been up there for 3 weeks, but I know when we went we couldn't get to the lake as there was hardly any snow along the shoreline area. You'd have to check with the locals, but my guess is you would be good up to at least Bald Mountain (a nice place to take a breather and enjoy the sights), but may have to backtrack into town again. Sorry-got sidetracked....back to lodging. There are some other mom and pop options along US 2 as well (Daveys Motel-nice people), and I think there's a Super 8 a few blocks further west on 2 if I remember right. Super 8 has trail access, but you have to run designated roads for a few blocks to get to the trail, so depending on what the conditions are like, that may or may not be a problem. Heading east towards Lake Gogebic, and north from there, you should find trails to be pretty good overall (again depending on when you go). Have fun and be safe!!

Stayed at the Travelers motel in Bessemer a few times nice rooms and very nice people.Located directly across the road from the trail. It's nice because it gets you away from a lot of the Hurley B.S.You park in front of your room and they live on site so less chance of your stuff being messed with.

Thanks guys. Made reservations at AmericInn. Direct trail access a huge plus. Hate trashed feeder trails or shoulder riding for trail access. Will be up Feb 3. for a long weekend. First time riding in this area of the U.P. Can't wait for some new scenery. Think Snow !
