Lies and rumors

I own Davey's Motel and I know the Mayor as we both own motels and make a living off of snowmobiles and skiers. We are not trying to close the snowmobile trail or is the city of Ironwood, this is false rumor started by a local club and its members that we have been dealing with for the last couple of months. The City of Ironwood has bent over backwards to help keep the snowmobile trails open when there has been problems, as snowmobiling is a big part of the city economy and will continue to be a big part of it. Yes I will ask anyone to leave the next morning when they come back late to the motel and wake half the motel up as would any other motel in town. Sam

Sam means well. I got chewed out by him 2 yrs. ago when my group came back at 3 am and we were loud. I guess we woke up his Daughter who was visiting. Any ways He was right when He said, "I got people sleeping here and this is what we are about, providing rooms so travelers can rest. Please respect the other patrons". You know he was right. Also, he let us use his shop and hot tub after the posted closing times. That was sweet. We apoligized the next morning about our one buddy who was loud and things went fine the rest of the week there. He did turn us on to using the local cab service to getting around town and to the Hurley night life. That alone was worth a bunch since we did not end up in jail with a DUI. I would stay at Davey Motel again.

Curfew?

I certainly hope Sam displays a prominent curfew sign at Davey's Motel, and points it out to arriving guests, so there are no surprises! It is not nice to be awakened by late arriving noisy guests, likewise, it is not nice to discover the existence of a curfew after the fact!

this is from their website

"In Ironwood snowmobiles may not operate between 1:00 am. And 6:00 am. On city streets. What this means is you have to be back to the motel by 1:00 am." plus a couple other comments about being noisey at night.

if I'm not wrong I believe the curfew was put into effect in 05 season??That did have alot to do with us going farther into the UP!!as we travel all night on Friday and like to take a trail ride when we get there and that's usually around midnight!!another reason we like to rent houses....

Well, that is fantastic to hear, cuz we run through that neck of the woods every year, and would hate it if we couldn't anymore!

Okay, it wasn't entirely clear from your post who's web site you meant, so I checked.

I have to say kudos to Sam for providing some extremely useful information on the Davey's Motel web site, including this News and Info From Davey's Motel. Be sure to read the latter.

These folks have gone out of their way to accommodate the special needs of snowmobilers, ATV-ers and the like.

It's all there, everything you could possibly want to know. It couldn't be clearer. Although it could do with some elementary grade school English & spelling lessons {wicked grin}:
Pet's (sic) are allowed in two rooms only …
Also stay on the trails as we are loosen easement's (sic) as sledders are not staying on the trails … [So don't loosen those easements, tighten them instead.]
There will be plastic on the floor in the rooms so you can put your dirty riding clothe (sic) and boots on … [clothes]
If you need we will have garbage bags available to store your dirty clothe (sic) and boots in … [clothes]
Please remove your ridding clothe and boots outside … [ridding yourself of your riding clothes?]
You have to park your atv's (sic) on the grass …
In summer there is lot's (sic) of waterfalls to visit … [lots]
The best places to get to the beach's (sic) are … [beaches]
The big plus about our area verses (sic) other areas [is] how easy it is to get to the trails, food, gas, etc. [verses are found in poems, this one needs to be versus]
[Pet's, easement's, atv's, beach's? these are all possessive forms, not plurals! Plurals [pets, easements, atvs … ] do not take apostrophes!]

There are signs as you enter Ironwood, it states, no snowmobiling after 1:00 AM. It is all about respect. It is your privledge to use the trails, not your right to use them.

curfew

The curfew only pertains to city access streets not the main trail #2 and its been infect for 20 + years. It was one of the stipulations in order to get access streets open to the Highway businesses so you can ride your sleds from the motels etc. to the trail. Sam

Sam, your idea of taking a cab after hours worked out great for our group. No sled impounds, no bailing anyone out, no crashes, no stolen sleds, etc. The local cab company started to know us by first names, after 3 nights we knew all there names too. The cab fare was not that much back and forth to see the sights in Hurley.

Motorized Trails in the Ironwood Caves Area

Mr. Davey, if I am not mistaken you went on public record here in Ironwood at a non-motorized sports workshop and told the city commission that you, yourself wished to have the entire SISU ski race course in the city designated as non-motorized. This course runs on many trails that were authorized by the previous commission as multi-use and for motorized use by snowmobiles and ATVs. No one is spreading rumors. It IS your own comments at public meetings which have shown your stance on local motorized sports. The local club supports multi-use trails for use by all and so do the majority of residents and businesses surrounding these areas.

I defense of Sam I believe he was a officer of Gogebic Trail authority who grooms trails in that area. Also, he has supported snowmobiling and has posted numerous posts concerning trail reports and conditions. I have never met him but seems to be a good guy. I like to cross country ski and see skiers and walkers on the trails. I just slow down and wave good to see people out enjoying the area. I don't know maybe this is blown out of proportion? Snowmobiling is vital to this area.

What I said is any portion of the SISU race coarse not on a motorized trail should be kept non-motorized to preserve the trail for future races. In other words it is the new trail built by ABR in the caves area that is not on a motorized trail. You can not have motorized and non-motorized use the same trail it is not safe period. Sam
