We are planning a family trip to Twin Lakes MI the week between Christmas and New Years. How is the sled traffic around Lake Gogebic, Twin Lakes and up The Keweenaw that week? Is this a bad idea? Thanks for any input.

We go every year with 5 family's and a group of ( about 20 +/- a few) We bring our kids and this is our favorite trip. The traffic is light ( IMO )and a little busier in & out of towns with gas & food. Gogebic is hit or miss with the ice being froze & safe . We stayed off it this year. We seem to have had issues over the last 3-4 years with kids & ice crossings. Here is a pic of this year. Can't speak to the Keweenaw,we never make it up that far with the group. Your good from Gogebic to Twin Lakes area.

We stayed in Twin Lakes December 2008 between Christmas and New Years and it was never really busy. Rode to Lake of the Clouds one day and Copper Harbor another, and some other trips in the area the other two days we were there. We would occasionally come across a large group but there were never lines at gas stations, backups at trailheads, etc.

I've ridden all over the UP and in the past 4-5 years I have never experienced a 'busy' week or weekend compared to 2000-2004 years when it seemed like all the hotels were full, the gas lines were long and the trails crowded. Seems like a lot less people riding.....

We stayed in Twin Lakes Dec 26 and 27 2009, Traffic was light those days, I can only assume the close to New Years, the more traffic their would be especially if WI has no snow.

this past yea, we stayed in South Range over new years for 5 days. I took my wife and kids 7 and 4 along.

I was't to sure what to expect. Busy? kind of. the main trails were busy, but nice (snow depending). Getting passed going 60mph on the railroad grade wasn't too great. 3 sleds had to be going 90.

We were able to take the trails less traveled, and not the railroad grade highway. Had a ride that was a 40 mile loop and ran into 4 sleds. 4. Felt like we had the place to ourselves. Still it was not too bad. I am guessing if where you are going is the only place with snow in the tri state area, it will be nuts.

That week seems to be family week. The kids are up, people are relaxing more on the trails with an easier pace.

I would say it is moderate to heavy traffic, especially for mid-week riding, but it isn't the same kind of busy you get on weekends in January when all the Robbie Racers are up showing off their sleds.

Lots of larger groups going slower on the trails has been my experience, and les of lets see who can get to the next stop first...

Christmas Break!

Back in 91, 92, & 93 when I lived in Bergland, I never even started a sled during the Christmas break-----too crazy and to many sleds! JMHO

Looks like a mixed bag. I think I would regret it if we didn't give it try. When I think about it, it's as much about the people as it is about the miles :)

I have snowmobilied out of Houghton for the past 11 xmas/new years. Each year is different but, in general if a lot of the areas in Wisconsin and Minnesota have snow the traffic will be less. I have noticed that the last couple years the traffic has been significantly down compared to the early 2000's. It is best to avoid the weekends of xmas / new years week. The only bad thing of the week is you meet a lot of riders with very low experience. You just have to have patience this week and enjoy your time off.
