It’s about who ya know!

If there’s one thing I learned from my grandpa, it was that he always said it’s not what you know it’s who ya know! High school baseball buddy of mine works the parts counter at the local dealer. Was in there a week ago picking up some parts to fix my cousins sled and I was complaining to him about the prices of used indy 600s. Guys want $5k for a 5 year old sled with 4000 miles on it that you can buy new for $7-8k. Been wanting to pick one up for my girlfriend as carbureted throttles are too stiff for her and sit down style sleds make her legs cramp up. Well fast forward to Tuesday morning I received a text from him saying they took one in on trade that has 9000 miles and a junk driveshaft bearing and could use a few other small things and to come and get it with $1000 cash. I went there not knowing it was going to be an anniversary model with a newer track etc. So I handed over the money and loaded it into the back of my truck. Took it home to tear into it. The bearing was in 1000 pieces and damaged the shaft so I had my buddy tig weld it and I took it to work to turn the weld off for a new bearing and also trued up the drivers. I installed all 4 new drive line bearings and seals, and all new bogey bearings and got it back together in 1 piece. There’s a few other maintenance items it could definitely use like a shock rebuild and some new cross shafts in the skid along with a clutch rebuild but I wanted to ride it a little bit before dropping any more coin. All said and done I have $1200 into it so far! 723A5536-2BB8-4B85-82CF-BF20FF770F28.jpeg 7DD2A395-7919-4D11-8607-F75967DC0D5E.jpg C241AEEB-E25F-4B9F-9465-1EAEE18A606E.jpg 36FEA92D-B685-4BD1-AE58-8401D2BD8B57.jpg 7D388D57-B0B8-4FD8-9902-709C978ABAA2.jpg F6692A06-4812-41B7-80E7-78EEF4624C9B.jpg E0139B06-8BBE-45B0-82D8-1FD99770E071.jpg

That's a great story Indy! Your grandpa was a wise man. Pretty sharp sled too, I bet she loves it! How's the compression? :)

Awesome! The “who you know” sure is important, but I believe in this case it is also “what you know”. Not many can buy a sled like that, confidently knowing they can bring it home and fix it like new. Great job by all! Very impressive!

Your grandpa's advice is right, with your abilities, and skill, makes for a great team! Way to go Indy! Things as this lead to weddings being so much easier?

Thumbs up to your employer that lets you use their CNC equipment for g-jobs. I have made many sled and PWC parts using our CNCs but two years ago an incident with an ex-employee and current employee using a CNC grinder for unauthorized business resulted in a policy where we could not use them anymore. But there still is the manual machines, Bridgeport a man's best friend. Kudos for the rebuild!
