Jetting and Clutching fro Out West

Can anyone tell me if it is absolutely necessary to clutch a machine for out west riding. We will be riding (2) 2007 Ski Doo 800 Renegades, (1) 2006 Ski Doo 600 SDI and (1) Ski Doo 600 Carb motor. I know we have to change the jets but I was also told on the 800's that they will compensate for the elevation. This will be the first time out there with our sleds, last time we rented. Can anyone help us out and tell us what needs to be done so we don't learn the hard way. We are staying in Laramie Wyoming and riding some hills, nothing too crazy, because we have a two teenagers with us. Thanks

The 800s have DPM which adjusts the carbs for elevation. You will need to remove all the pin weights from tra arms in the primary clutch along with making clicker adjustments up or down to achieve the proper max rpm. There is ton of videos on YouTube showing both adjustments.

I took my 600 short track polaris out there a couple years ago and rode 1 day without low elevation weights. I went to shop next morning and changed them in parking lot. Made a big difference. Its not necessary to ride but I would highly recommend it. Easy job, not much money. You lose so much power to altitude already - don't want to lose more to clutching

You can call the Ski-Doo dealer in WEST YELLOWSTONE, they'll advise you as to which combo to run

We've brought out our flat lander sleds from Chicago to West Yellowstone several times

On POLARIS sleds, 4 grams lighter on the weights with the same PRIMARY spring & stock set-up in the secondary works fine

1-2 teeth smaller on the top sprocket if you're feeling ambitious

There is a ski doo dealer in laramie that should be able to tell you how to set the sleds up. Not sure of the name of it used to be maverick motorsports.

You will have to throw some hollow pins in the Clutch for sure and possibly Springs. (lighter weights) I have some laying around here I would sell for 1/2 price. You are probably going to the Snowies and will be riding around 8000 ft up to 10,000 max. Check the St Boni Motorsports Web Site, they have the high Altitude spec sheets on line. They show every Sled and what is recommended.

The only place you can go out west and not worry about re clutching is the Black hills and then if you raise the Clickers 2 spots it works ok.

If you have a Dealer change them over and then put them back it will be pretty expensive. We always did our own and have all the Tools. Now I run all 1200 4 Strokes and with the new Clutches. I will have to buy all new Clutch Ramps and possibly Springs if I go higher. Last year we went to the Black hills and didn't change anything on the 1200's and they ran ok. So I know I am good to 6000 feet. We have been going to the Big Horns and Snowies on Atv.s now and don't change anything.

Did you read my original post, I posted a question about what I need to enjoy the trip. I have no idea where your response is headed. The reason for the question is so we can have the best possible time. And it's their trip not there. LOL

Thanks much guys, I will heed your advice and look into it. Longtrack I may be getting back to you on those weights. I will PM you and let you know if I need them.

You should need any pin weight. Basically you run them empty. Remove the threaded inserts. There maybe two inside the tra arms.

Skidoo stock Pins are solid, they do not have inserts. You can buy hollow threaded Pins and then do that. Either way you have to buy new Weights.
