Jiffy Propane ice auger

Just picked up new Jiffy propane auger, took it out to the lake to check ice conditions and wouldn't even cut one hole!Just bogged out continuously. Hung my head and went home. Back to fleet farm with it they are sold out, closest store with one is in Hudson Wi.

Anyone have one of these?

Im a little gun shy now, my 3hrs model 30 stars every time and never let me down. Technology sucks, I wish it was still 1985!

I bought a propane auger last year and love it. Never any issues at all. I have read about guys having issues when it's too cold for propane to be stable but I think that temp is below zero. My manual referenced this - I just do not recall the temp. If you are inclined to fish in those temps, try to keep a tank warmer than that and you should be fine. Your issue may not be "technology" related but rather, a manufacturing / assembly issue. I get it though, new tool or toy with issues = no fun and disappointment.

yeah, im hoping its a mfg/assy issue. I bought it to avoid getting smoked out the shack when opening up my holes and was kind of pumped about it. I had talked to a few guys last year that had the same rig they all said the same thing they love it.

Auger was in my shop before I went out and I kept the bottle in the cab of my truck so I don't think low temp is an issue, 10 minutes from home to lake. Starts easy, 1 pull idles fine, just no power. There is no choke or anything on er. Im kind of old school and don't really embrace change as well as I should ( that's my little lady says anyway ). Maybe Ill get the money back and burn it out the pipe of the ol 6 hundy.

If you want to avoid being smoked out... One of those 40v battery powered augers is the way to go.
You can drill 40 holes thru a foot of ice on one charge. Very nice, but expensive.

I thought about one of those electric augers too. I certainly like the idea of battery power. One question I have on those would be, what is the life of the battery overall? I would be a little bothered if the auger was down to 30 holes on a charge, then 20 then,,,,,,,, My intention with the propane was to buy one auger that would last. I hope it does.

I really went back and forth between propane and electric and I looked hard at the Jiffy just because a lot of the hard-core fishermen that I know use them. In the end I bucked up for an ION 40V 8". This thing cuts like crazy. Pull the trigger and you're drilling. Now if only the fish were as easy to catch.

Sounds like you got the rare bad one. I think Fleet Farm should back it and get you a replacement, even if they claim to be sold out.

Fleet farm swapped er out, just got in for the day. Cut about 30 holes today no problems. Must have been a bad egg, I have to say I like it. A guy and his boy near us were ripping holes like crazy with one of those Ion electro jobbers. Their second season on the thing, and they said it cut like the first day they got it.

I guess technology is a good thing. Ha!

Update for you on my propane auger. While using it yesterday, my clutch came apart and broke a couple of springs on the weights. Fortunately, my brother had a hand auger so we could at least continue to fish. I bought this auger last year in November and I think the warranty is for 2 years so with a little luck, this will be covered. Stuff happens. I'll report back on here after I get this repaired to let you know how Jiffy performs as a company standing behind their product. I hope I can give them an A+ rating.

I use a bosch 36v drill, I need a cordless drill and circle saw anyway up nort instead of hauling my 4pc dewalt back and forth. works great but had to get a extension last year, got 21 - 22 holes one day thru 30" - 34" and still never used the 2nd battery.

Added a clam plate last year, stops the hand from getting twisted.

6" lazer cuts FAST and once you get the head started, you can get a BIG fish through a 6" hole.
