JUST IN...Bearskin Trail Closure

Concerns regarding the structural safety of the Pinewood Trestle on the Bearskin State Trail in Cassian resulted in the Department of Natural Resources closing the trestle to snowmobile and groomer traffic for the winter season.

“We’re gonna be reviewing repairs necessary for the Pinewood Trestle,” DNR park manager Dawn Bishop said. “We’re going to put together a plan for the repair or replacement of that structure.”

According to Bishop, a structural failure was noticed underneath the trestle which created a safety concern.

While no timeline has been established for the repairs, the DNR has been working with local snowmobile clubs to reroute the snowmobile trail to circumvent the closure until repairs to the bridge have been made.

“We still have one bridge down there that’s a problem. It’s not safe and they’re trying to come up with a reroute,” Cross Country Cruisers president Dave Assmann said.

Assmann hopes the route will be corrected come snowmobile season, and that it looked as though everything would be OK.

While the trestle will be closed to heavy recreational vehicles, such as snowmobiles and groomers, it will remain open to foot and bicycle traffic.

FYI......Northwoods passage is also working on an alternate route as well, as the Bearskin connects with the Hiawatha Trail (its our main railroad grade heading to Lake Nokomis and Tomahawk) at Highway K...we want riders to be able to come south from Minocqua, or be able to head north from Tomahawk to the Minocqua area....and I'm sure between the two clubs we will have a few alternate routes to get you either direction...it is frustrating though, as the bearskin is the main artery for much of the northwoods...and this issue has been known for quite some time, and nothing was done about it.

You said "Assmann"..do you mean Kramer?

But really, too bad it wasn't identified in the spring.

Story was in local paper...not sure who that is (Assman)...sorry didn't notice that..lol....I don't know why they didn't act on it sooner...it is a very important trail, and has a few businesses down here a bit miffed...I personally don't ride that trail much except to get from point A to Point B quickly...I prefer hitting the trails on the northwest side of Nokomis, and running north to hazelhurst (7, 51a, or the 5 trails) to Forest riders...from there I like riding west on the 10, 12 trails....i tend to avoid the high traffic areas to the north and east.

This has been happening on the Buffalo state trail where we groom. We mentioned something in the spring to get inspections done but haven't heard anything yet. The bridge supports are rotting from the inside, they look good on the outside until they settle about 3", then they split and you can see how hollow they are. Going to be a high dollar repair.

Thanks for the update. Let us know if/when repairs will be made. What I find interesting, I would be willing to bet the sleds are not the issue, but a groomer is. I say, groom up to the bridge (or as far as the groomer can go and turn around) and allow the sleds to go over the bridge.

I know Cruisers is working hard on it, and Like I said..our club has some nice alternate routes further south...if you guys want to try something new...just give me a shout, I can help plan a route depending what you would like to do.
