just missing the powerband in the deep

have a 95 XLT SP with a 136" x2" paddle track on it. we just got 17" of snow and the sled is having an issue getting over 5500-6000 rpms in the deep. fine on the trails although I feel like it should have more snap on packed. Would a worn out primary spring cause this issue? I tightened down the secondary spring and that improved it a touch. With the conversion to the paddle track and the replacement of the 8 tooth driver down to a 7 tooth driver to accomodate the paddle length in the tunnel would it be more than just a new spring? Any recommendations to try first to the clutch so I dont have to spend a bunch of money on different clutch components... appreciate the help, not much fun having to watch from the packed trails!

I talked to a guy that does a lot of clutching and he said try a different gear before monkeying with the clutch. SO next question is.... is it the upper or lower gear I should swap out. I would guess probably the lower gear and go larger. Top looks like a pretty small gear already, stock it is a 21T. bottom I am not too sure about, couldnt find a part number from the online catalog. How many teeth should I step down or up depending on the gear that is replaced? Is one tooth enough to make a difference? Does anyone know where a good place to order these online?

drop 2 teeth on the top gear and go up 1 tooth on the bottom gear. If you can find them used, it'll be a cheap mod. I got a used gear for $5 at haydays

Another thing to keep in mind is that sled was not designed to run in deep snow. The exhaust outlet could be getting plugged up with snow and chocking out the motor.Try putting a shield by the exhaust outlet to try and clear the snow out of the way.Clutching and gearing is also needed when a bigger track is being used.

My math be off, if so, disregard: but didnt you effectivly gear down 12.5% when you decreased the circumference of the drive from 8 teeth to 7 teeth?

you want to gear down. Gearing up will cause it to take off slow.

Agreed, how much of a gearing change is usual for a similar modification. Is 12.5% a lot, a little, or about right from other peoples experience with similar traction changes?
