Keep old sled or buy new??

I have 2002 xcsp edge with 6,200 miles original owner. This sled has been flawless with no problems but I am getting nervous due to the miles. This was my first new sled and has been the most solid sled in our group of riders. I have been looking at new sleds and have become very discouraged due to the lack of knowledge of the salespeople and the prospect of spending 7 to 10 thousand on a brand new one. I am not opposed to refreshing my old girl and am looking for suggestions on must do's if I am going to keep her another season.

Buy a 4s any brand & be happy & not worry about miles. Used 4s just as good as new but depends on the bucks you want to spend.2002 xcsp edge with 6,200 miles old tech & not rider forward so time for you to move up.

if you bought it before 2002 seasons, that would be roughly 885 in miles a year, I would say keep it. You could always try to look at what blue book will give at 7K miles, 8K miles, etc... to see if there is a huge price hit and unload it before that.

There are a lot of deals right now though. If I willing to part with the cash, I would probly buy new.

What is your wifes sled? Maybe move this one down to her and sell hers. Or keep both if you got the room. Owning it from new and knowing everthing about it makes a big difference. Rebuild don't cost that much if you do it yourself.

Which engine? Our 500 xc's are going strong all original and nearing 11k now. Our 600 XLT has 11.6k but one new cyl.

Buy new. That 02 has got to be getting tired. Sell it while it's still got some good left. Put that money down on a left over 08 or 09 and keep it for 8 years. There are some REALLY good deals to be had out there.

If you want to stay reliable, and easy to work on/fix, stay with what you have. A buddy has ridden a 06 Apex for the last 2yrs. He is now back on a 04 Edge 600 for this year. And he is excited as all heck.

Personally I see no reason to replace your sled strickly due to miles ( but it's a good excuse for the misses). I have the same sled it's a 02 XCSP 500 and have 8900 trouble free miles and haven't used it the last two year since I bought a 05 Ski Doo that now has 7800 miles. My wife's 04 Ski Doo has 10,700 miles. My 00XC500 was sold at 12,000 miles trouble free. The only sled I sold because of break down's was a 98 Indy 500 that sheared a crank shaft at 5500 miles and again at 6300 miles.

I switched from Polaris to Ski Doo because of the REV riding position. I'm going to keep maintaning and ride my Ski Doo's if they break down and cost to much it fix then I'll replace them but not before. New sleds cost to much and I would be hard pressed to sell the ones I have due to the economy and miles.

However, if you are looking for a change go for it.

My buddy has one also with over 9,000. 600. I wouldn't upgrade just because of mileage. If you still enjoy it, I'd keep riding it.

We haven't had to wrench on it, but everything is much more out in the open than it is on my Fusion (IQ).

Unless for some reason your bank account is seriously top-heavy, keep it... I know I like to get a sled once in a while too but with the state of everything If it ain't broke don't fix it...Unless of course you get a deal of the century...THEN BUY THE BUGGER... Ah heck, just wing it...maybe you could give yourself like 50-50 odds of buying a sled than either way you were right as can be without being wrong at the same time...WELL HERE'S WHAT I'D DO, IF YOU'RE MARRIED, ASK YOUR WIFE IF YOU SHOULD BUY A NEW SLED AND IF SHE SAYS NO, THEN GO BUY ONE, AND IF SHE SAYS YES THAN.....I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THIS TYPE OF ANSWER.

I would not be afraid to ride this sled. Both me and my friend have 02's, his the same as yours and mine a ski-doo. Ive got close to 15,000 miles and his 10,000. We come up with the same conclusion every year. We are afraid the cost of a new sled won't offset the improvements you will see in the ride of the sled. Don't get me wrong, it will be better, but neither of us ever get sore from riding or old 02's, so why upgrade. The only thing that would persuade me would be resale value, and my sled is to far gone for that.

Run out with your permission slip & do it! You still have a good reliable sled that you can keep as a back up/extra.. Freshen it up with a honing, rings & pistons & you should be trouble free for the next 6,000 miles or, you could sell it out right as is. I will say this much, once you get on an updated model, you may not want to look back at the other one again unless you have to. By the way, I know m8man's wifes answer to that question, why do you think he wouldn't know what to do if she said yes! Of course, that could mean he would have to spill as much coin for her in return for the permission slip. LOL!

Your '02 was near the end of the evolution of the xcxp's and it is still a good sled. I have a bud that has an 800 xcsp who doesn't like rider forward because it is colder. He had about the same miles as you and to feel safe he put on a new track and drive chain. He went through the clutches and all the suspension wheels. For about $1200 he should be good for another 5-6 thou. If you like the sled it is worth fixing it up. However there IS a lot of newer stuff out there that can be had reasonably. If it doesn't snow until later on there should be some real fire sales after the first of the year if you can wait that long. You are in a good place. Take your time.

I have a 600 XCSP with 11,000 miles on it. I use it as a back up sled or whenever someone needs a ride. The thing just keeps going. I put new pistons and rings in it just for insurance but have never touched the clutch. Keep it greased and the power valves cleaned and you are good to go.

It is hard to beat the new technology however. I ride the ole beast on occasion and doesn't take long for me to jump back on the new one.
