I say keep her 10% unemployment threats of higher taxes you could really be wishing you had that 7 to 10 k this time next year. drop some rings in it and put another 4000mi on it.now if we get no snow you wont feel bad looking at a sled that has 3 or 4 hundred in it as apposed to a sled you just dropped 9k on or worse making payments on loosing 1000 bucks in value every 6 mo the first 2 yrs.I have a bud with a 02xcsp with over 13k on it still running strong with original top end yes it is true you can get big mi on a 2 stroke no matter what they say

I have an 02' XC500SP with 11,000 miles. I was hoping for a new sled one of these years, but due to losing my job in this economy, that is not in the cards for awhile. It is still on its original track, and nothing has ever been taken apart with the motor. My wife/backup sled is an 02 550 Classic, also with around 11,000 and the original track. Both will need new track very soon, but I have no plans of doing anything with the motors. They both have M-10s, and that is what is the most important to me!

Snow monkey if you still enjoy riding your sled keep it... Wait atleast tell your on a trip or something. If you see something you really like buy it. Make sure you know what you want.

Two years ago fall I wanted a new sled and asked my wife, to my surprise "sure." She kept telling me she wanted a pool. Well I said no way are we gettting a pool (cause I will be the one taking care of it ALL the time) I figured she would forget by spring. When May came around she remembered but I told her absolutely not and that was the end of it..... So now I have a pool. The new sled was her leverage so watch out.

I think keep it, even if you buy a new one. 6200 miles isn't high yet, just do pistons and rings. The cylinders are plated and don't wear as quickly as the older steel sleves.
Good luck on your choice

You can probably find a new leftover, if you're not too picky, for the same price that your 02 was (in 02). Accordingly, your used sled will be worth a lot less though.

Now this is a great post. Too many people think that 3500 miles is high miles. A well taken care of 2-stroke can last 10,000 and beyond with good care and maintanence!!!

How ever if you have permission from the wife go get one! Now is the time to buy with all the non currents and manufacture incentives! There is no comparison between the old and new in terms of ride! Pick the color you want to ride and let er Rip...

I have 2004 xcsp 700 with almost 9000 miles and a buddy has 2003 with 13000 miles. Both have original topends. That sled has many miles left.
But the wife said ok and if its in the budget, go get a new one.

Trade it out now while it still has some worth and find a good deal on a new leftover or a low mileage used one. The used deals are out there if you look and are in no hurry.

The new sleds are so much better than the old ones you won't give the '02 a thought after the first ride on the new one.

Boy, I must live in a cave. 6-10,000 miles on a machine that costs 7-10k and there are concerns that it has seen its better days?

cars-trucks get 200k easily on them these days, even ones that are work-horses...if they are maintained. just blows me away that they dont build a sled better than that.

i read this one in complete shock. i assumed these things were good for a long time.

I am going tonite. I will pick out the best sled for you and leave a low low out the door price tag on the windshield.

As soon as the snow flies we will have to get together and ride. I will break the new sled in for you for free if you like!!!

thebluff: carb 2s engine is done at about 10,000 miles & new injected 2s if you get 10,000 miles you are the doing very very well. With carb 4s engines we are beginning to see 30,000 - 40,000 miles & still going strong but too soon to know about injected 4s but should be as good or better as carb 4s. The chassis seems to hold up all right need boggie wheels & tracks but lots of friction parts on sleds. Typical 2s sled engine nothing like your truck 4s engine. Rider forward to me is the single best reason to move up from older sit in sleds no matter 2s or 4s engine but no sled or engine built that goes 200,000 miles. That is why we want to move up before the big 2s engine meltdown in an old style chassis & have to spend big dollars on an engine repair. To me if you are are a trail rider buy a new or non current 4s sled & stay with it for 15,000 to 20,000 miles then move up to another 4s because it is lighter, has better gas milage, handles better... stuff like that. Boondockers don't put on a lot miles but operate engines at very high RPMs to stay on top of powder. Boondockers all about light weight, like 2s engines, long tracks & engine power. They tend to hit logs rocks ,stumps whatever is under snow & are more talented riders than trail riders. See skylar's post "the project begins" to understand how powder riders get ready for season & money they spend to keep their sleds going. Trail riders & boondockers very different interests both snowmobilers but want very different conditions for perfect day of riding. You get them both at the Bluff. I hope this helps....sometimes you are so deep in biz a rider is a rider just keep them happy staying at the Bluff.

buy what you feel comfortable with. Dont be perswayded to buy a 4s if that is not what you prefer. If you had good luck with the 2s buy another. If you want to switch it up buy a 4s. All I am saying is buy what you want for YOU. Not what everyone else thinks is right by them.

Whitedust: Good points but many riders do not hang onto the sleds for that many miles! Two strokes can be very durable if taken care of! 4-strokes have evolved greatly and have there place in the industry but are not for all. Each manufacture has it's ups and downs! Some handle better, some ride better, some have better accelleration and so on. You really can't go wrong with any of them! Pick a color and be happy with what you have purchased! There is no one right choice to make accept for which one you feel comfortable spending your hard earned cash on!

Oh yeah, it is true us boondockers can find some of mother natures most stationary items from time to time!

Skylar we need to hook up for a few rides this year!!! What you think?

Greg: I think 4s engines will be enable trail riders to keep rider forward sleds for a lot more miles than we have seen in the past with 2s. I think the market is changing as we experience increased miles on 4s with little or few problems. I have not had good luck with newer 2s with factory crank seals & ring life & blew up at about 5000 miles which made me look to 4s for a better solution to high milage engines. Too soon to know how injected 2s etek will hold up but I am hopeful they will do well. Over all when you buy new or used buy whatever engine tech that you like. There is no all encompassing engine tech for everyone.

You are correct the 4s engines will allow you to keep your sled for more years that the 2 stroke. However how many riders out there actually put 10,000 plus miles on their sleds? The technology being developed due to EPA and consumer demand changes quicker than the miles put on these sleds.

Dont get me wrong I agree 4 strokes have a great place in our market! I am not trying to argue that. Just saying that you cannot take anything away from the 2 stroke!

(There is no all encompassing engine tech for everyone) Very well put!

Pick a color, spend your hard earned cash and enjoy the best sport on the planet!!!
